Rep Power: 0 Clutch + bearings: should I fix on 23oK mi. '07 Si?
Hi all,
My trusty 2007 Si sedan (230K miles) is making, what I think, are input shaft bearing noises while driving. It's the original clutch.
I got a few quotes. One place said bearing noise, but it could also could possibly be a chipped gear. We discussed options, but basically, I need to commit to having the transmission taken out and evaluated. It could just be a bearing thing and replace clutch while it's open.
But worse case he said if it's gears and such, the rebuild would be expensive and he recommended you'd find a used transmission and replace. Cheaper option.
Now if the car was all beat up and rusting out, I'd just sell the car. But it's in great condition and probably worth it to fix.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Personally, I'd replace the bad bearings in it if that's all it needed. A pair of input shaft bearings is pretty cheap IMO (40 and 43ish, list)
If there are any issues with gear crunch when shifting or popping out of gear (3rd gear, tsb 08-020) now would be the time to fix it. (350ish list for the gear set only).
Add for 3 oil seals, some hondabond, and some trans fluid.
Yes there's a lot of labor involved to open it up to do the work, but roughly half of the total labor is gonna be for getting the darn thing out of the car and back in.......and at least you'd already know the history of your own trans.
A used manual trans in good condition may be kinda scarce (knowing these cars there's a good chance that most have seen some abuse), but I've never looked for one for an Si. Whatever trans you find could need that 3rd gear bulletin too.
Assuming you can find someone who is equipped and capable of doing the work correctly. There's a lot of hacks out there. Mr. Goodpliers can cause enough damage to make a car worthless real quick.

Well it's all fixed:
Replace clutch
Replace counter shaft and ring gear
Replace front counter shaft bearing
Replace rear main shaft bearing
Axle seals
$1581
Drives great and the clutch pedal is so much easier to push than before. Like it's brand new!
