30000 mile checkup

Hi all,

I have a 2012 Civic EX. The dealer wants $500 to do things like adjust the valves, change all the filters. and some other stuff. Do all the filters really need changing at 30000 miles? Or do the valves really need adjusting then as well? I couldn't find anything in the owner's manual saying anything about checkups. Please advise. Thanks!

Re: 30000 mile checkup

Kudos for getting out the manual.
What DID you find about maintenance in your owners manual??

What services have already been performed to the car up to this point?

Re: 30000 mile checkup

I have performed the oil changes. At regular intervals.

Re: 30000 mile checkup

Ask your dealer to point out to you, in your own owners manual, exactly where it specifies all of the services they are trying to sell you.

The person at the service counter can't do that.

If you follow the maintenance minder (look that up in your manual), it would have asked for a set of air filters at around 25k. (Number 2 on the minder display.)

It will probably ask for an ATF service a little after 30k. See what number that is.

If you don't want to follow the minder, then go with maints every 30k.
Typical 30k:
Oil change

Rotate tires (Look at the tread on your tires. How much longer do you think they will last? Do you need tires before it snows? Is it worth doing anything with them at this point?)
We balance tires at 30k if they are worth doing. (never mentioned in the manual at all)
We also do a 4 wheel alignment at this time. (never mentioned in the manual at all)

Filters, yes if you have not done them yet.

ATF service, yes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plugs, no. 105k.
Valve adjust, no. That's to be done if they are noisy, a problem, or MAYBE 105k.
Coolant, no. Check your book for time/miles.
Brake fluid every 3 years.

Did that make sense? I have a 2 y.o. screaming here.

Re: 30000 mile checkup

^ this

They are probably quoting you for a valve adjustment, new plugs, filters, and ATF service including filter.

Including labor 500 seems about right but it does not all have to be done imminently. Its all about "preventative maintenance" at the dealer. If ATF fluid is red, but has a smudge of brown or dark hue, they will say it is bad.

Keep in mind it is a good idea to change the automatic fluid now, doing it later without ever changing it could cause more harm than good.

Re: 30000 mile checkup

i have a 2010 Civic and i bought it used and since then i have had it serviced at the dealer several times. But i haven't even had a Maintenance Minder even show up. And i have 33k miles and no Maintenance Minder has appeared. they want me to so 30k service but the Manual says nothing on the matter. all the manual talk about is the Maintenance Minders but since none have shown up, i do not know which to follow. i wonder if each time i have taken it in, they would have reset the Maintenance Minder.

Re: 30000 mile checkup

On the 2010, you can view the upcoming MM codes by holding the button until display starts flashing info, then read displayed codes and leave button alone and turn off key.

At 30k you should do a DW1 drain & fill, air and cabin filters. And your brake fluid if original is 5-6 yrs old, and due every 3 years.

I suppose you take it in for service according to mileage on a sticker on the windshield?

If you have services done before the minder is at 15% you will never get to see the wrench symbol or the reminder displayed on the odometer.

As Craig said, you can push the RESET button to view your remaining oil life% and next services to come.

If you have never seen it, then they have reset it at each service.

What services have they performed for you up to this point?

What services do they perform for a 30k maintenance?

The system would have you doing oil changes and tire rotations thus far.....
At the service closest to 24k or following, the system would ask for air and cabin filters
At this service 33k it might ask for a transmission service along with the usual oil change and tire rotation.

Re: 30000 mile checkup

If it does not mess with your warranty, I would not take it to the stealership, they will bend you over.

Take it to a honda or japanese specialist.

If you do take it to a stealership, then make sure they are not charging you 1 hour of labor to replace the cabin filter (doesn't need to be replaced unless you smoke in the car, also takes 2 min to change). And other things that they love to "add on" to regular maintinence that are not needed. They will overcharge you for anything if they can.

The valves need adjusting and engine filters do need changing ...if the maintenance schedule requires it. If you are not sure, check the schedule in the owners manual. And keep it filled out when you do have work done, try and get the dealership to stamp it for you and save the receipts.

I hope that helped.
