In 2010 we purchased a new Civic LX (automatic transmission). The dealer has serviced us for all the maintenance needed since she was new (oil, tire rotate, etc.)

Last time we were there they wanted an arm & leg for an air filter & cabin filter. I watched Youtube and figured out the cabin filter in 10 seconds. Purchased our own filters and saved a lot.

Now they tell us that it needs a tranny fluid change... for around $100 bucks. Seems expensive to me, so I checked Youtube and found how to do it as easy as pie. Read a lot of threads on this board and have come up with the following questions -

How can I tell what generation our car is? 8th or 9th?

Some threads say change the tranny fluid every 10,000 miles, but the dealer recommends 30,000 (and so do a few people in these threads). Which is correct?

From this website it sounds like the safest bet is to use Honda ATF so that's what we will use. I'll purchase it from them this week. Everyone agree?

How can I tell if my car has a filter that's serviceable? If so, what do I need?

Do you replace the drain plug washer every time? Should I purchase that at the dealer or can I get it at the auto parts store for less? How do I know exactly what I need if I purchase from the parts store?

I read this and wonder if there is something I need to do in the 2010? If so, where is the set/reset button?
How do I reset the computer that calculates the change intervals and provides the "3" code?
Press and hold the set/reset button until it flashes then let go, about 10-15 seconds.Then press and hold it again and it should reset itself.

2010 is 8th gen.

At work we recommend 30k.
But you can only drain about 1/3 of the fluid at any one time.
It holds about 8 or 9 quarts total, but you can only drain about 3.
Do the math.

Filter is not necessary unless you really want to change it (we don't). There is an inline filter on the back of the trans, it's a kinda a ***** to get to.
The other filter is inside the trans, it is only serviced during a rebuild.

Drainplug washer, I don't replace it until about the 3rd time the fluid gets changed. You can change it if you want, dealer should have the right one on the first try.

Reset button? It's the maintenance minder, same as for when an oil change is done. YOu as an owner cannot reset individual service reminders, so just keep track of what you have done and remember it when the minder pops up the number for a trans service. Reset the minder with your normal oil change.
