Trailer Hitch

Has anyone here installed a hitch on their Civic?

I have a 2012 EX and need to be able to tow a small utility trailer.

These Civics are good for towing like 1000lbs.

Who makes a good hitch?

Thanks!

Dave

Honda doesn't even list an accessory hitch.
I don't wonder why....

Re: Trailer Hitch

I would be hauling small stuff and light loads of firewood on occasion. The car has the ability to tow, but is not likely designed to do a lot of it. So many new cars aren't rated or suggested to tow anything. It's really disappointing! You should not have to get into a truck to haul something that is not trunk worthy.

Re: Trailer Hitch

U-Haul? Hitches-R-Us? Yellow pages?

Every hitch I have ever seen on a small car looked really scary...But SOMEONE made it for the purpose.

Thank you! That's what I was looking to hear.

With a rating of only like 1000lbs of trailer and cargo, owners have to use their heads. The car is not like a pickup truck, but at least it can handle doing a little hard work making it just more than a commuter car.

Re: Trailer Hitch

Um, I know my car is a '99 but I was looking through my owner's manual one day and saw ' Towing a Trailer'. I thought to myself Civic's can't tow trailers and this what it said,

Towing a Trailer

Your vehicle is not designed to tow a trailer. Attempting to do so can void your warranties.
You might want to check that out before you dump 5 years of warranty on your 2012.

Re: Trailer Hitch

While I don't intend to tow a trailer I did install a hitch for my bicycle rack and it works and looks great. Mine was $146 installed.

I did this, also. I bought the hitch from Amazon.com and installed it myself in about 30 minutes. It's great for a bike rack, but I would not tow a trailer with it.

I'm agreeing with this, but my buddy doesn't believe me when I say its a terrible idea.

His argument is it doesn't matter whether 600 lbs of people inside the car or 600 lbs behind the car its the same effect on the vehicle.

I think its a bad idea. Thoughts?

Re: Trailer Hitch

Honda rates the car at 1000lbs of towing capacity. Many new cars do not have a rating from their manufacturer for one reason or another. Even a 1-ton pickup truck has some kind of towing capacity.

This was a selling feature for the car. At most, I'd be towing with a utility trailer a few loads of bark mulch a year and a small boat. The trick is not to overload the car's transmission and to get the fluid changed on schedule.

Re: Trailer Hitch

Are there ANY class 2 hitches for the 6th gen? I've seen plenty of class 1 hitches from etrailer (24677), u-haul and other brands. They hook up with 1 bolt on each side at the beams and then also gets connected to the tow hook in the middle of the back of the car with a u-bolt.
I'd probably want a trailer hitch that uses 2 bolts for each side. I haven't found any class 2 hitches but that doesn't mean a reputable company doesn't make them, or just a strong class 1.

I'm guessing the 8th, 9th have similar trailer hitch designs and so that's why I posted here.

No I'm not planning on towing anything huge, just want to be able to tow a small u-haul trailer at will when I want to.

EDIT:
class 1;
Draw-tite brand: 24677
Curt brand 1992-2000 all Civic 'cept Hatchbacks, Del Sol and Si: 11207
Hidden Hitch brand 1992-2000 all Civic 'cept Hatchbacks, Del Sol and Si: 60834
Reese brand: 77025 (I think)

Class 2; None

Re: Trailer Hitch

We carry trailer hitches. If you enter your vehicle it will sort the reviews (scroll down once on product page) based on your vehicle first. Hope this helps...

Re: Trailer Hitch

I tow 2 motorcycles, a generator, 10 gallons of gas, tools spares, my buddy and all of our gear for the track in my 97 Prelude and the car doesn't flinch. Did the same with a 87 Prelude.

Haul away!
