Rep Power: 0 2009 LX with 160K...200K maintenance suggestions?
I have a 3 1/2 year old 2009 civic LX with a whopping 160K miles (purchased new) and plan on being over 200K in a short time. The car is solid and everything works. Amazingly, call me crazy, but this car runs as it did brand new and I've replaced only the brakes/filters/fluids/battery.
What maintenance should I perform on this car now or at 200K? The only things I have ever done to this car are as follows:
oil/filter a billion times
battery
front rear brakes
air filter a few times
tires (of course)
I believe that's all I've ever done. It runs perfectly. Never had an issue. I don't add a drop of oil between 5000 mile changes. I wanna keep it that way. I know I need to flush radiator and brake lines...change all fluids. Can someone give me a list of what I should do? Belt, hoses, and such. I read in this forum that it has a timing chain instead of a belt. If this is the case, I am not touching that. I'll just hope it lasts 300K. Do I do anything with the transmission (its manual shift)? Its less then 4 years old, so dry rotting isn't as bad an issue as it would be on most cars approaching 200K...however it DOES have a ton of miles on it.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Gee. I don't see cars get miles racked up fast like that very often here. Does it ever get to cool off?
I would change the trans fluid if it has never been done. 30k might be overkill as you have proven to yourself, but the older cars developed bearing problems rather early sometimes......one could attribute that to lack of fluid service.
How about manual trans fluid every 100k starting now, and let us know if yours blows up?
I really don't see many manual transmissions in these cars, and also haven't seen any problems with them here yet either. Honda MT Fluid
Brake fluid every 3 years. DOT 3.
May as well do coolant too. It is long life coolant, but you have a ton of miles on it. Drain and fill. Honda Type 2, pre-mixed, blue in color. Probably only one gallon.
Serp belt whenever it starts getting a bunch of cracks in it. Turning brown has been normal and is not a good reason to replace it.
Factory hoses have been lasting 15-20 years here in many cases since the early 90's. (not all last that long though.) I'd just check them on a regular basis.
Barring a disastrous overheat situation, I'd expect 10+ years regardless of mileage, but please don't hold me to that.
Aftermarket doesn't last nearly as long as factory.
Wipers?
Whatever breaks, fix it.
