Rep Power: 0 Traded my '04 EX on an '09 LX...questions
I've owned two '04's and have logged about 350,000 in both combined. After about 160,000 miles on each, both cars started with the head gasket leak. I didn't feel like dealing with it anymore so yesterday I traded my most recent '04 EX on an '09 LX, 5 speed with 37,000 miles.
This is a really nice little car! My first question is do the newer gen Civics have any recurring problems like the previous gen head gaskets?
What things should I watch out for?
I was averaging around 39 mpg in my '04 1.7vtec. Can I expect the same or better with the 1.8? I do a lot of highway driving and do roughly 50,000 to 60,000 per year.
Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

As far as i know the only real issues are with the manual trannys, and engine block cracks..but believe the engine block is for the 2006-08 models.. You should get around the same gas mileage. I have an 07 and have not had any major issues at this time (knock on wood).

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

There is a VIN# break for 09 blocks. Google the bulletin 10-048 and check your VIN against the ranges listed in the bulletin, or better yet, have your dealer do a VIN inquiry to check for recalls and updates that warranty will take care of. If the block bulletin applies, it will show up in the VIN inquiry.

Thanks for the helpful info guys. I called Honda and they said there are two active recalls on my '09 right now. The engine block and sun visor. He said they olny fix them in the problem actually happens. The engine block recall is good for 8 years from the original sale of the car with unlimited mileage. Which is great since I put about 60,000 on my car per year.
By the way, after my first week, the car averaged 38.8 MPG for two tanks. Which is great since that'll come up over 40 MPG when it gets warmer.

I have a 2009 LX 4 door manual shift bought brand new....have put 160K miles on it. It has never had one issue, runs like it did brand new. No creeks, rattles....absolutely amazed at the quality of this car. The manual shift is as good as new and the engine is very peppy still. I used to get 40MPG in the summer on occasion. I average probably 35 these days. Uses no oil. Its been a real good car for me...definitely the best I've owned.

Awesome to hear Gobuckeyes! That's exactly what I'm hoping for. But 160,000 miles hits the worrying point for me. Both my '04 started with the head gasket problem at that point. I'm hoping this one doesn't have the same problem.
The only trouble free car I've ever owned was a 1992 Toyota Celica St. I bought the car at 40,000 miles and ran it to 280,000 and only ever changed two haedlights and the oil. That car would probably still be running to this day had I kept it.
Here's hoping I have such luck with my new Civic!
