How difficult is it to replace hybrid battery?

I have an 06 Civic hybrid with 40,000 miles. I went to dealer today due to a check engine light. They say it is a bad hybrid battery and its $3200 to install a new one. I am thinking of purchasing a used battery and I'm wondering how difficult is it to install. I've worked on my own vehicles from oil changes to rebuilds. The dealer says its 1 1/2 hours labor to install.

Also, my car is not under warranty.

Re: How difficult is it to replace hybrid battery?

its not really difficult, just time consuming. some of the guys on ecomodder.com have done it and they say its usually possible to "recondition" and reuse the old battery. i forget the name of the company that does this but its a ton cheaper than brand new and you dont waste the old battery which is still mostly good. im not sure on the exact details of removing the battery but there is prolly a thread about that too. i dont have a hybrid manual to look it up. worst case, you really do not need to change the battery. the car works fine even if its dead, but gas mileage wont be as good.
