Repair estimate...is this fair?

I spun out on the highway and smashed my rear bumper into the median so there's quite a bit of damage.

Honda quoted me $1000 (aftermarket parts and labor) for a new bumper, bumper cover, absorber and tail light.

Another body shop quoted me $1800 for all of the above plus the repair of the quarter panel, which is only slightly pushed in.

I don't have insurance and just bought new tires so I'll probably go with Honda and just live with the dent in the panel. I'm guessing I'm not going to do any better than $1000 if I'm having someone else do the work.

Thanks

If you don't have insurance (I assume you had only liability) then any price a shop throws out at you is fair.

Re: Repair estimate...is this fair?

That seems bout right especially since they will have to paint the bumper which will be 300. Then the bumper , tail light, and absorber will be pretty close added up to 1000.

But if you dont want to pay that much you can always go to the site carparts.com and look for a bumper, absorber and a tail light that are in good shape at a slavage yard. I dealt with that site and got a rear bumper with mud flaps, and the rebar for 200. I also got a tailgate for like 400. And they where all in perfect shape.

Mine cost $250 painted and installed.

You can get all those parts except the absorber new at http://www.certifit.com/ for like $200. Also, like stated before http://www.car-part.com/ is an excellent place especially if you can find the same color.

Guess what I'm saying is an hours work can save you $500.

Well the price does vary on the paint on which auto body shop you go to.

Re: Repair estimate...is this fair?

I checked out some sites and found lower aftermarket prices than what Honda quoted me - they used Keystone, I used discountbodyparts.com:

Rear tail lamp: $112 -> $45
Rear bumper cover: $188(capa) -> $68
Rear impact bar: $105 -> $43
Rear energy absorber: $53 -> $48

Total without S&H is about $200 less.

Where do I go from here? I still need them to do the work. Am I in a good position to negotiate a lower price? For example, I don't need a capa certified bumper because I'm not going through insurance.

If they won't reduce the price I was hoping they would consider repainting my front bumper at no additional cost; the paint is starting to chip as a result of work the previous owner had done.

Thanks

Re: Repair estimate...is this fair?

As from experience After market parts are crap, I had to have the bumpers re-painted numberous times due to the paint peeling off. See If yo ucanfinda salvage yard with a bumper, sometimes, you can get the exact clorto match as well.
