Rep Power: 0 getting dirt for gas mileage?
i got a 2009 civic LX a couple months ago, and i just passed the recommended "gentle" break in period of 600 miles, but im still going easy for the first 5,000. My question is, why on earth am i getting crap gas mileage, almost too low..
i'm getting about between 21 and 22 combined driving mpg. i know im supposed to wait for the break-in period, and i prob wont be pulling 26's and such till after 10,000 miles but still, i feel like its almost abnormally low.
anyone that thinks i floor it around town, WRONG, i drive like a grandma with it since its new. keep it under 3000 in acceleration and let it coast whenever possible, ex: up to a red light and such...
anyone have ANY idea whats going on with my civic?

its still new, i didnt start getting better mileage til after 20k miles, thats the long breakin. also depends where you drive, if its flat roads, i sometimes get 35mpg, in the hilly mountains, im down to 22-24 again. so we really need to know more about the conditions to say for sure somethings wrong. are you at sea level or hi altitude, do you do mostly highway driving, or just city, is there heavy stuff in the car, etc.

daily driving -- 16 miles to school and back city driving
weekends -- 100 miles every weekend on the highway for temple
im in chicago, and i dont have very many hills over by where i am. for the most part, its all flat land, and on the highway i average 70 mph and i get around 24-26 mpg

ehh im just saying its not typical civic gas mileage...
my cr-v used to do better than that, and i thought the civic might have a problem, but i guess its normal, i'll wait for the break-in period to be over

Well my GF was getting 26 - 27 when it had that few miles on it. Now she's up around 29ish combined and she doesnt drive slow. You may want to just stop by your dealer and ask them what they think.

Re: getting dirt for gas mileage?
I've gotten pretty consistent fuel mileage since I bought my car just over a year ago. Pretty consistent 33-34. I drive pretty hard normally and live in a hilly city. Wife has an 08 Coupe LX and she generally gets 36-40. We both have sticks, use regular gas, and have no mods. I would worry if you are getting in the low-to-mid 20's... Unless you're driving Pike's Peak everyday or are forgetting to shift out of first.

Re: getting dirt for gas mileage?
I had a 2007 Auto EX Coupe last year and it got from 28 to 37 mostly sticking to around 30 to 34. In October my wife got rearended and the day I got it back from the body shop I immediately traded for an 08 Auto EX Coupe-brand new, and it averaged about 26-29 for the first 3,000 miles. After that it's been getting 30-32. Personally anything less than 30 on a Civic just plain stinks, but what can I say; Civics have come a long way and are much more refined, sporty, and luxurious compared to those little square buckets they started off as back in the 70's!
My driving consists of a daily 80 mile round trip commute to work which is a mix of 70%highway 30% rural/city and is rather hilly. We're at 6k-7k in elevation here so I can't complain.
