Hello: What exactly is this indicator measuring? The unit of measure is %, but of what? When I reached 4500 miles on my odometer, my oil life was at 30%. I've had the car for 11 months. Could this be referenced by time or mileage?

I believe the manual states it is a measure of oil velococity. Or basically how effective the oil is.

I was under the understanding that it calculated it off of mileage.
I could be wrong.

I did what Alpha 5 suggested and called the Service Manager of our local Honda dealer. He said that a computer does calculations between how high the engine turns or revolutions and combines it with the mileage indicator. Viscosity has nothing to do with it. So, basically it is a percent ratio of engine speed(revs) and odometer readout. I didn't even ask how they do that. A computer does it all. Thanks guys for your responses.

ya it would be nice to measure viscosity, but it doesnt. its basically based on mileage. which isnt the best way, since time is also a factor. i personally think its a waste of time to even have that "feature" because its misleading.

my silverado uses the same thing except calculates in engine load, when towing the % goes down faster

Yes the dealership is correct in the statement that the computer calculates the amount of revs AND also takes into account the oils viscosity averages with rpm and time engine has run/idled. So remember the harder you drive/rev your little engine it's going to need it's life blood replenished on a more regular basis. If anyone races MX you'll know what I mean that it's imparative you change the oil because of such high rpm's these little motors are operating at. On average a mx bike now adays (4-strokes) will run at the rev limiter around 13,000 rpm's. Just some experience with the new 4-strokes I have encountered over the past few years now. That's why I bought the Honda Civic just because I know these motors can handle the rpm's due to their past history with racing. I will never go back to an "American" car again and my brother works for GM!!
