Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

Sorry to revive an old thread BUT. . . my 2007 ex couple AT is only averaging 29 mpg. i've got about 6500 miles on my car and i do a pretty good mix of city/hwy MOSTLY HWY THOUGH!! i wanted to see what other people were getting.
supposedly, the mpg were supposed to creep up after 3-5k miles but i haven't seen any improvenment. its been a steady 28/29/30 mpg. The milage is supposed to be 30/40. i just wanna know whats up?

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

I don't know that much about the new gen of civic's, but i think what could be the prob with yours is that there is still a break in period left on your engine. It should start to pick up in miles per gallon ratio sometime soon for you. Hope this helps.

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

That's very normal, you have nothing to worry about. Always take the rated MPGs with a grain of salt. The conditions under which the cars were tested for their fuel efficiencies were highly regulated and chances are do not reflect each of our personal driving styles. You should be getting worried if you're getting ~20-25 MPG, not 30.
You should practice more fuel saving driving habits (speed, acceleration) and see if you can get more MPG.

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

eh, most newer engines can take upto 20k miles before full breakin. every new car gets bad mileage. it will improve. i used to get 30-32mpg, now at 55k miles its more like 42.

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

I have a 07 si and I am getting 22 city 28 hwy (which is less than the window told me) and I have to burn premium unleaded (up to over $3 gal here in Washington state) It is definitely lower than my 05 civic got, but I stepped up to the high performance and boy have I enjoyed it. I would probably get better is I kept my foot out of the gas..........what a ride!

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

I have a 5sp and have not burned thru my first tank of gas....I will let you know my #'s when I start accumalating them. Are you flooring it, you know from each light you floor it to the next light? Also, that breakin period is true.....I just got out of an Element and it averaged 18-19 mpg(I was ******* it...so I also changed my driving habits) for the 1st 12 months and then the last 3 months I had it...it started to get 20-21.5 mpg. I only put 11k miles on it....but I am sure it might have started even getting better mpg.(that too was 5sp)

Hope that helps,
JonBond

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

drive a little slower until you get up to 5k miles or around there... the mileage estimates are based on broken in cars with no passangers or stuff and speeds of aprox 55mph

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

I've had my 2007 Honda Civic LX for 6 months and have average 40 mpg in the highway and 31 in the city. I have the manual 5 speed tranny. I also only have 2300 miles in 6 mos. Yeah, I don't drive that much.

Re: Im only getting 29 mpg!!!

I have a 2 month old 2007 EX sedan with AT. First tank got about 30mpg (likely about 50/50 highway/city), second about 28 (quite a bit more city driving then, more like 30/70 highway/city). My first significant highway trip (after about 650 miles on car - it had 11 miles on it when I took delivery) I got about 37mpg (doing 65-70 on cruise control for a round trip of about 330 miles - but I did hit slow construction traffic a couple of times).

Overall I drive pretty conservatively, since I am trying to stretch the fuel - no hard acceleration starts, try to anticipate stops, use cruise on highway and set speed to keep rpms between 2000-2500 (70mph on flat pavement = about 2250rpm, so that's a comfortable cruise speed).

I do not buy the long break in argument. These R18 engines are built to very tight tolerances and are designed for low friction running right from the factory. Sure, the EPA estimated mileage figures are pretty lousy estimates, but the '07 civic is certainly capable of very good gas mileage right from the factory - in my experience at least.

But don't underestimate the effect of driving style - in my 1999 Chevy Cavalier (2.2L, 5-sp MT) I routinely could get 36-40mpg range on the highway, cruising at 65-70mph, and I used to average 25-28mpg city (EPA rated that car at 24 city and 34 highway).
