Question Gauge wiring question

im less than proficient when it comes to electrical stuff, i know how to do it and what needs to be done, but ive got this complex where i think im gonna screw something up...

anyways my questions... i just bought some wire tap in from radio shack, part number 64-3053 which i was planning to use to tap into the wire for the air/fuel gauge. According to the directions on the back of the packaging you just insert the run wire, put the tap wire in, and press down. This metal piece cuts through both wires, i assume carring current from the run wire into the tap wire... is this a currect assumption? And am I supposed to strip back the coating on the wires, it seems like the metal piece just cuts through it, but Im just trying to do it right so I dont screw anything up. Next question, for the power wire, can I just tap into the wire on the back of the cig lighter for the power? If so can I use mutliple taps to run multiple gauges or would that be too much on that one power source? I think thats all my questions, thanks in advance if anyone can help out.

Ohh, almost forgot, I made a post last week regarding the hookup of my voltmeter, I was told that I could hook it into any 12V power source and get a pretty accurate reading of what was actually at the terminals, so my last question... assuming Im running the power to the
gauge(s) off the cig lighter, could I also tap into the cig light again and use that as my 12V power source, or even (i hope this makes sense) tap into a power wire that was tapped into the cig lighter as the 12V power source for the gauge. Sorry for the long post, just trying to learn and do it right, thanks again.
