Help on a turbo for 2000 D15

I bought a kit for my son's 2000 with a D15 (all parts included, turbo, manifold, intercooler, piping, wastgate, etc). I have not installed it yet. What else will I need to do to make this set up functional? I have heard I should increase the fuel pump, injectors, etc but is it all necessary? Any and all help will be great!!!

Do you have a link to the kit? That would help us figure out any parts that you are missing.

Fuel pump and injectors are a must, however so is the engine management. With the D15 you can run a chipped ECU and use Crome, Uderdata, or one of the other more expensive Hondata solutions (S300 I think will work for the D15). That being said, all of these are much cheaper than any of the piggyback "solutions" that are available for the 7th gens.

Once you figure which way you're going to tune it, then you will need to find a tuner who can tune the car reliably.

Re: Help on a turbo for 2000 D15

Thanks. You just sparked more questions for me.

I bought it on eBay and the item number is 230201092977.

What size fuel pump will I need and what type of injectors? Can you explain a little more on the fuel management needed with the ECU? Is it something I can do or is it best left for a professional?

I do have a tuner about 3 hours away from me who charges $150 per hour to tune Civics. Is this reasonable? I remember it being in the $100 range for my Chevy 383 stroker motor.

Ouch. That's an SS Autochrome kit. OK, there are a few things that you are going to have to do to not get into a huge headache with this kit.

First thing, that manifold will have be braced or it will snap. With the weight and inertia of the turbo, combined with the thin steel of that manifold + heat (lots of heat), those things snap all the time. You will need to make a bracket and weld it to the manifold and the frame. A simple piece of 4mm steel welded to the mani and the frame and connected with a bolt will make all the difference in the world. They just don't hold up very well.

Second. For the turbo, you will need to run an oil restrictor on the feed line or it's bye-bye oil seals in the turbo, which means bye-bye turbo. A restrictor is simply a fitting on the turbo (a reducer) that takes the -4AN feed line and, well, restricts the flow of oil down to a manageable level so the turbine doesn't get flooded with oil and the seals blow. You should be able to find these online (Ebay) or you can get one from www.fast-turbo.com.

For the fuel pump, if you're not going to boost above 6-7 psi, the stock fuel pump should be fine. If you (or your son) wants to go higher, then Walbro makes a decent high-flow pump for about $100.

For the injectors, you have several different options. Lots of folks run DSM 450cc injectors (Mitsubishi) which will throw more than enough fuel. RC makes 450cc injectors as well. The only thing is that I can't remember if the D15 runs low or high impedance injectors so a resistor box gets thrown into the equation.

For the tuning, ask the tuner who you will be going to what systems he recommends/is comfortable with. That will make a huge difference in the reliability of the tune. $150/hour is pretty damn cheap.

I would recommend heading over to d-series.org and looking through the forced induction section. Those guys over there have a lot more experience with 6th gen and below Hondas than the folks here do. Most of what I learned about pre-7th gen turbos came from that site.

This is what you are trying to avoid by bracing the mani....

Re: Help on a turbo for 2000 D15

This is great info! You are probably a life saver. I custom build jeeps so a minor brace for the manifold will be a piece of cake.
Is there an ECU out there for the D15 with an automatic?

Re: Help on a turbo for 2000 D15

From what I understand - I'm at the limit of my pre-7th gen knowledge here - the P28 coded ECU is the most popular one for chipping. Once it's chipped you then have full control over the ECU. But I'm no expert on these cars or their ECUs so I would default to the boys at d-series for a question like this. It may even be possible to chip the current ECU that's in there. Unfortunately, I simply don't know.

Another good resource for this is the forums at pgmfi.org - linked Here.

Hopefully that'll get you going in the right direction for engine management on your son's D15.
