New brakes, but no shims?

I got my AEM nissan brakes and brembo rotors yesterday. I notice that the brakes didn't come with new shims. I thought for sure that they would. Do I have to go to the dealer now to get new ones? Damn, I don't want to pay more money. I'm disappointed.

Just dont use them. OR.... pull them off the old pads.

Are there advantages to not using them?

Re: New brakes, but no shims?

the shims are there to keep anti-seize or anti-squeal on the pads at all times. I had the aem/nissin pads, i dont think i used the shims. you can reuse the old ones if you clean them and put a little anti-squeal compound on them. the only bad thing that could happen if you dont use them is that your brakes might make some noise.

Re: New brakes, but no shims?

Shim's also act as an early warning that you need new brakes. The tabs of the shims will rub against the rotor creating a high pitched squealing sound once the brake pads reach an excessive amount of wear.

I think you're confusing the shims with the clip located on all and any make inner brake pad. The outer pad has no safety clip, and that's the pad that has the shim on the back.

I don't know where you guys are getting your shims for 1-2$, but Honda here sells them for $11 a piece! Autozone doesn't stock them, nor does Napa. But I don't care, I never liked the shim much anyway. My current shim's "arm" is broken off, so I cannot re-use them, nor would I do so if they weren't broken.

How do you like the pads? Do you know the break-in process on those?

Re: New brakes, but no shims?

i didnt like them. they didnt last long and worked exactly like stock, which makes sense since nissin is the stock OE supplier for brakes for the civic. I went with axxiss ultimates after boilermaker suggested them, best pads ive used so far for DD.

I don't know, I think they feel like stock with normal driving, but the grip power is enhanced in fast braking. I like them.
