Hey everyone.
I'm trying to find a solution to my problem so I thought I would try this forum, there seem to be a lot of people who know what they are talking about

Basically my problem is this. My distributor died about a month ago and I had to get a new one put in. After this my car takes a long time to start. It turns for about 3 to 4 seconds then finally starts up. Because of the long crank, the check engine light comes on. It does this about twice a week.

A month before I put that on, I had to replace a lower balance shaft seal and the timing belt and other belts.

Does anyone know what this problem could be?

well..obviousley its not a 7th gen civic since you say you have a distributor. So how bout a little more info. What year and make aslo what mods are on this car. Not knowing this info my only guess is the timing is off.

The timing is fine, I got that checked. There are no mods. It's not even a civic :| but I thought I would try this forum anyways. Its a 1990 Accord. If it makes any difference this used to be my car but my sis has it now, I just got a 2004 Civic. I guess that wouldnt be 7th gen, or would it?

sounds like the starter is bad, or the teeth on the starter is going

also make sure the connections to the starter is good, has a good ground and have a good positive

be careful when you play with that, it has high power so you might want to disconnect the battery before you do that

Really, alright I can check that. It's weird though, it only started right after I got the distributor put on. Could it be the ignitor in the distributor or perhaps the Main Relay?

Could be a weak igniter or coil. I have replaced lots of coils on 90's accords.

Can you explain those ignitors and coils a bit better for me Are they expensive? Are they inside the distributor? And, are they easy to fix?

Depends. On some models, the coil is on the outside of the distributor. Easy to replace.
On newer ones it is inside the distributor. Pop the cap and rotor, and probably a plastic shield inside there and you should see a black coil. Odd thing is that if you had the entire distributor replaced, this should not be an issue.

I'd doublecheck every connection to make sure ALL cables are tight. If the coil is outside the distributor, you'll see it near the firewall, usually near the passenger side.
Check the wires, and try another coil.

I'd still doublecheck the timing, in particular the timing belt alignments.

if that does'nt fix it i would try a fuel pump and filter replace due to sounds like the fuel pump is leaking back down in the tank then pumping back up once you crank the car
