Could VTEC being disabled hurt me?

Could VTEC being disabled hurt me? Okay, i know i'm gonna raise hell with this... I think there may be a problem with my vtec enabling, my vtec light just doesnt come on anymore, since it hasnt come on i have had bad gas milage, but no true loss in performance. could this be giving me the bad gas mileage? i am going to look at the wiring tomorrow and check everything.. my check engine light is on and i have reset the ecu and it comes back on.
