Ok, the first post is kinda confusing.
Did you holed the key in the crank position for 30 seconds before it (started to crank) or before it (started and ran)?
If before it cranked you have a short somewhere, bad stater solenoid or a bad connection at the battery.
If before it started you have other issues besides the starter.
Where you low on gas, parked on a hill, purchased gas at a discount gas station and got a tank of water? When was the last time you checked the plugs?
Has is done it since?
Have you had any maintenance done to the car lately?
Has anyone been under your hood since you and the B/F broke up?

I have no idea if your civic has this, but if it has an imobilizer that reads a code off the key, it can do that. My car used to turn over but not start, and I would have to play with it for a few minutes for it to start, and then I found out that it just wasn't reading the code from the key right, so you just have to take the key out and put it back in and turn it and the car starts right up. The green key symbol on the dash will flash if it didn't get a valid code, otherwise it is solid.

try turning to ON position and wait for a few secs before actually turning the motor over. oh and you should never let it crank more than 10 or so cycles. you could burn out the starter. just let off and try again after a little bit. check the spark plugs. usually old plugs cause problems with starting.
