If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Firing the parts cannon only fixes cars by accident, but it sure generates DangerZone some hefty profit.

Handy pic of a parts cannon:

Re: only 20 mpg?

I don't solve problems by throwing parts.

Are the brakes still dragging?
Are the tires flat?
What codes are in it?
Coolant temp sensor accurate or not?
Is the cam out of time?
Is the front O2 sensor any good (if original)?
Is the exhaust restricted?
Are you driving it like you stole it?

I can make a brand new Civic show under 20MPG if I try hard.

Re: only 20 mpg?

brakes dont drag. there are no codes. 36 psi in all 4 tires. exhaust flows freely. head and timing belt were done 5k miles ago. drive like a normal functioning member of society. what else you need an answer for?

I'm not the one that needs answers. I'm just tossing out ideas here.

Yeah, look into these:
Coolant temp sensor accurate or not?
Is the cam out of time?
Is the front O2 sensor any good (if original)?
Fuel trim data at idle, 2500 no load, and 2500 highway load?
5-gas readings? Pre cat readings?

What is the MAP voltage at hot idle, in park/neutral, all loads off?

Got a scanner that works with this car-- engine datalist?
Manual or automatic trans?

Does the engine just feel anemic?

When did this poor mileage issue begin?

Are the brakes still dragging?
You have not figured out why the brakes "disappear", why should I assume you know that they are, in fact, not dragging at any time? After they "disappear", are the rotors freeking hot? (I have had this happen to me with my lowrider, stuck caliper caused fluid to boil and WHOA-**** no brakes!!)

Do we need to establish that you are actually calculating gas mileage the correct way? Seems to be a big problem with many people.

Ethanol kills gas mileage. Are you getting 10% E or under?
Burning the good gas?
