Rep Power: 0 verrry high milage Civic with almost zero maintenance
I was recently given a 2002 Civic LX with 1.7 4 cyl and auto trans.
The trans was rebuilt and beefed up about a year ago. Here is the kicker. Other then oil changes every 3,500 miles it has had no maintenance done.
No spark plugs no air filter changes. Nada.
It has 239,000 miles on it now and still runs great. no noise or anything. Everything works fine.
So needless to say it is going to be getting some attention!
I am far from new to cars. But this is my first Honda.
So I am hoping to hear some words of advice from those who are more familier with this car.

Other then the trans rebuild and oil changes it has had no work at all done to it.
Brakes plugs all belts etc are all what it was built with by Honda.
I was amazed when I was first told about the car ( it is a one owner) and the miles. I was expecting it to be a pile. But actually there is nothing at all with how it runs and drives.
Due to having MS I am limited in what I can do myself on it. But will work out a list of priorities and get things taken care of as money permits.
Last tank was 37 mpg and about 30% of that was with a/c on. And 90% in town driving.
So I am happy with how it runs since the car was basically given to me with no cash from me at all.
Just want to do what I can to keep it running like it does!

holy crap, where is that guy going at 100k miles per year?
btw, i would definately change the timing belt. 80k to 100k is normally a good time to change them as they're about worn out and are in danger of breaking.

^^ meh, you'll just bend some valves and score some pistons. lol. but yea, if you replace the timing belt, definately replace the water pump with it.

yeah your timing belt is on barrowed time get that done as soon as possible i cant stress that enough . a list of what you need.
timing belt
timing belt tensioner
all other belts
all gaskets corresponding with replacing the timing belt
water pump
spark plugs
air filter
most likely the valves need to be adjusted
check all fluids
thats all i can think of regarding the engine.

Due to my health I will have to have the work done. Working on cars for me is limited now.
Yes I do know it is an interference engine and what that means. U worked in the automotive field for over 25 years and was ASE certified at one point.
I will do well to be able to break the spark plugs loose. Damn MS takes a lot away from you.
I will have to find someone I can trust to do the work. Someone who is willing and able to do it on a super tight budget.
I do plan on taking pictures of the parts that come out. I want to confirm what is in there and you can bet the same brand will go back in!
I am sure there are Civics or other Hondas out there with more miles with little to no work done on them. Still it would be tempting to send the manufactures some pics of their great lasting parts!
Does say something for Honda too.
We have a Chevy Trailblazer here that has been maintained that has less then half the miles and runs and drives like crap. Even more so when you compare it to the Honda.

Brakes are working great with plenty of pedal and no noise or problems.
So no reason to panic yet. Of course only time will tell when it gets to the point to do brakes!
