Rep Power: 0 Annoying & Unique gas tank issue
OK, so I live in OREGON, where is't ILLEGAL to pump your own gas. Frankly, this drives me insane, because anytime the gas station guys fill my car up, no matter how many times I tell them to top her off, they never really do.
I have a 2006 LX, and as many of you '06 owners may have noticed, if you leave it up to the pump auto shut off, it will quit with room enough for another 2 gallons or so to go. I don't know if this is some type of a design flaw in the opening or the down pipe, but whatever the reason, I know for a fact I can squeeze another 2 gallons or so in there if I am careful. I know because I did it when I was in Cali, where it's cool to pump your own gas.
As a result, instead of the 550 miles per tank+ I was gettin in CA (mostly highway), now I am lucky to eek out a measly 450, 500 if I am lucky here in the Pacific Northwest.
So, I am wondering if any other 06 owners have noticed a similar issue, and if so - are there any rememdies, like maybe removing a vent tab or something along those lines ....

Rep Power: 247 that just sounds dangerous to me. im pretty sure the gas pump stops at that point for a reason. whenever i top it off i ussually only put a dollar more to make it a whole dollar. like if it was 32.45 i would put up to 33 or 34.

Rep Power: 265 I would check the owners manual, and find out the tank capacity for an 06. I know my 04 is ~13 gallons, but your's is prolly different. There are numerous threads on here, mainly pertaining to 7th gens, but likely still applicable in this case, where it's mentioned that by "topping off" the tank, you can actually damage the car, by soaking the filter made to catch fumes, etc. I wouldn't make a habit of overfilling your tank. So, figure out what the capacity should be, run it down to almost empty, and see how much it will take. If it's not filling the tank to capacity, I'd check with the dealer, maybe you have a bend/defect in the pipe to the tank, that's causing the pump to shut off prematurely. Maybe a vent is clogged, or was never opened during manufacturing? Who knows.

Rep Power: 364 I also live in oregon. I fill up right around when my gas light comes on, and I get about 9.5-10.5 gallons in there. Of that, I get 31 in the city, and 35/36 with more highway. So that comes out to a lot less then your 500. But I'm not pumping my own gas, I'm letting the people do it, which of course as you know is the law. As for the pump, read this, http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question25.htm

Rep Power: 295 well just to let you know topping your gas tank off is not necessarily a good thing...see when u over fill you gas the vapor evap system starts getting flooded and when ur pumping you can often times send gas right back up the vapor tube back into the gas pump...but there are instances where the vapor tube has too much pressure or what not and the fuel gets sent into the charcoal canister which can cost up to $400 or more to replace...the charcoal canister basically filters excess hydrocarbons from the gas vapors before it releases the pressure inside the tank to the atmosphere...and once liquid gas hits the charcoal canister it can damage it and it wont properly function and in older cars (sometimes even new), often times, will cause it to fail smog (in California anyways)...after i learned this in my automotive tech classes i've have yet to top off any fuel tank

Rep Power: 266 i use a credit card at the pump, so when ever the pump stops, that's it. i'm done. i don't put any more in. when i used to pay cash, yeah, i'd round up so i didn't have a bunch of change in my car, but with a credit card, it's not an issue.

Rep Power: 296 yeah the 7th gen civics were 13gals, i think the 8th gens are too. But honda usually gives a extra gallon of play room.
I found out the hard way that my integ doesnt have that extra gallon of play room after the gas stops. By not toping off it'll slightly increase your gas mileage anyways since the weight of your car will be reduced. You should just let it go, its not a big thing.
I find that a weird law that you can't pump your own gas? does this mean gas prices are higher in oregan to pay for the labor of having someone pump gas for you?

Rep Power: 0 No it doesn't raise the prices. When I drive home to NY, I stop in dirty Jersey for gas... it's cheapest there than anywhere else I go through, and I'm at about 1/4 of a tank, so it works well for me.

Rep Power: 0 I'm thinking to prevent people from doing stupid things such as dropping a lit match after lighting a cigarette, filling up unauthorized containers with fuel, etc. Also in NY I know it is illeagal to put your gas cap or something along those lines in the pump handle so you can sit in your car while it pumps itself. Maybe the law to have people pump your fuel for you also prevents this from happening? All in all, I think safety.
