So my car needs a new timing belt. not because its slipping or anything but its just at the mileage it needs. Does anyone know how hard it is for me to do it? i have the 1.7SOHC. if its to hard then i would rather have someone else do it. how much does it cost to have it done for me? thanks. Also, i recently got out of college and i drove on the highyways the entire way. i never revved it up above 4k rpm during that period. and it has 102,456 miles. should i still get the timing belt changed?

its pretty difficult if you dont know much about cars. alot of stuff has to come off, and you have to worry about timing. i wouldnt even think about it without a service manual and even then... its a few hours work for a pro at least, usually around $400 for labor. just get it done at a good shop.

well im am pretty knowlegble? on cars. I was voted best automotive student in high school 3yrs in a row. i just have only really worked on older cars with pushrods so i dont know much bout OHC. thanks though.

ya you should be able to figure it out tho. i would recommend just grabbing a service book for $80. www.handaaccessories.com it has everything about the car in it.

I did the timing belt myself about 20K miles ago before I left to come to florida for school. I will tell you this, it is not hard at all to do, just time consuming. It took me about 12-14 hours to do, only because I did it in my driveway didnt have air tools and had only basic tools. Also because I took my time to make sure it was done right. I made a DIY on doing the change with pics. If you do the belt, I recommend changing the harmonic balancer, water pump, and timing belt tensioner. you can do the cam and crank seals too, but I didnt.

Ok cool. well i ahve a shop that i could use. but i am a little uncomfortable with the timing situatin. i know how to do it i just hasve never done it before. i think ill have it taken to the shop because it sounds like it takes a long time to do it. and i ahve two jobs so i dont have time. Thanks to all of you.

I changed mine at 80k it was chunking on the smooth side and my tensioner was just starting to make noise. its been thru a cam gear change and a cam install. its one of those things that you should definatly have done at 100k or be left on the side of the road thinking you should have.

there isnt anything to time. Just turn the engine to TDC before you remove the belt. when at TDC there is a mark on the crank sprocket that aligns with a mark on the oil pump housing. at the same time, the "up" word on the cam sprocket is pointing straight up. Also what I did was I marked a spot on the cam and a mark on the engine with a red marker and a mark on the crank and the engine so when I installed the new belt, I made sure those marks aligned all back up. They did so I new I didnt mess up the valve timing. besides, when I removed the belt, the engine didnt move at all.

Old thread, but, need to ask...my car has 68,000 miles, should I change my timing belt and tensioner? Next weeked I have to travel like 500 miles and don't want any car trouble...

Changed it anyways...I dunno, is it me or what? The care somewhat feels better...engine response is like...livelier...maybe it was a tad outta time?Hmmmm....
