Rep Power: 257 Auto trans fluid in oil
A friend of mine who is going to some mechanic school in PA said that his teacher told him that putting a little aut trans fluid in your oil will clean all of the engine components. Have you guys ever heard of anything like this, it was supposed to be an old mechanic trick?

Rep Power: 0 Yes, I have heard of this but this is only a trade to the older engines from back in the day. Don't do this to your car. If you want to clean the internals there are a few brands you can look at like SeaFoam or AutoRX.

Rep Power: 294 Yeah, I heard of this too. I've also heard of kerosene being used. But like the guy above me said, don't do it on a modern engine.
Edit: specifically don't use it when you are using modern engine OIL

Rep Power: 428 they make engine cleaners, I mean they make products designed to clean theengine. but unless you havent changed your oil on a regular basis, or have 300K miles, your engine shouldnt be that dirty.

Exactly. The purpose of this type of cleaning came from a time before they had modern additive in the oil. Todays oil can suspend carbon particles in the oil to prevent sludge and carbon deposits. 30-50 years ago oil did not have this property, so methods like this where developed to clean engines that had this carbon sludge and carbon build up because tranny oil was thick enough to put this into suspension so that it could be drained out, but since today’s oils do this already, there is no purpose in this.

Rep Power: 246 well where i work a couple guys had some pretty dirty oil(mind you these cars are well over 100k) and when they drained it..still left the drain plug off...and added about 2qts of trans fluid thro the system. after it all drained out they added oil and boy was the oil sooo clean like brand new. i would only suggest this on older cars. prob wouldnt b worth it on our cars. but yes u can put atf thro the system but recommended on older cars.

Rep Power: 257 My buddy said it makes everything in the engine very very clean. I am not going to do it, have no reason to want to clean my engine like that. I was just wondering if anybody had heard about it. Do the engine cleaner that are made for our cars do a good job?

Rep Power: 0 I have tried AutoRX and it worked wonderfully on my previous car. You can access their site at www.auto-rx.com. you would only need to this if your engine has high mileage.

Rep Power: 322 I still use Engine flush. Gunk brand. Only because I go 6k between changes and feel guilty about leaving it in that long. I've also heard of ATF fluid being used as a fuel additive
