05 EX Tranny Swap

Hey, experts! I'm going to attempt to replace my transmission this weekend (5-Speed MT). Does it matter if I yank one from any year between 01-05, or do I have to stay with my car's year? Also, does the trim matter? Like, can I use an LX or DX tranny on my EX?

Additionally, any tricks to know when getting a transmission from the junkyard? TIA

Jason

Re: 05 EX Tranny Swap

Any year will be fine however you want to still use an ex trans because they have the shorter sporty gearing. And how are you planning on pulling it? You usually need a jack to support the trans when pulling the bellhousing bolts, and all of the yards around me don't allow jacks.
i would pay the $50 or whatever and have them pull it, they might have a low mileage one stashed somewhere, or know which car had a really good trans when it came in

Re: 05 EX Tranny Swap

Thanks, Colin; I'm not overly concerned about the sporty gearing, especially if it could possibly save me some gas with the longer gears. As for the pull, the yards near me don't pull the parts (I don't think...? I'll have to check), but they do have several engine hoists on the lot for use.

**Update**: The junkyard here does NOT pull the part for you. I'm searching for one that might.

If they have engines hoists that you can use you could pull the engine + trans as a unit and remove the trans one they were out of the car

Re: 05 EX Tranny Swap

That sounds like a plan! Just making sure, now, if I put an LX or DX trans into the EX, it isn't going to cause problems?

Nope won't cause any problems, just worse acceleration because of the longer gears

Re: 05 EX Tranny Swap

I never really noticed a difference, I put an ex trans in my old lx,
5th and I think 1st are the same, so passing and accelerating were better, but it didn't seem to hurt fuel economy

Re: 05 EX Tranny Swap

Forgive me if I seem thick here, but I'm at the junkyard and looking for transmissions... I could have sworn my starter motor mounted to the rear of the transmission, but all the ones I've seen here are mounted to the front of the trans. Am I going insane? Is there any configuration on an 05 EX coupe that would have the starter motor mounted in a different location?

UPDATE: Disregard; my memory was totally incorrect. My starter is mounted in the front. Swap is underway!
