Re: Custom Trunk Lid Liner Project

haha yeah it does.. but im gonna hook it up like you did. i like that idea better anyways.. i ALMOST bought LEDs at walmart today, but they only had white, and i was lookin for blue.. so none yet.. lol

i was wonderin though, i was lookin at ur pics last night of how you have it, on the sides and in the middle.. how do you have them all set up together? are they just somehow wired into each other? i dunno if ill have blue on the sides as well, but if i was going to do that like yours.. how did you get them like that?

i like the channel though.. that vid with the little small light LEDs lighting up to the beat is pretty sweet.

Re: Custom Trunk Lid Liner Project

Just out of curiosity. Would the same effect be achieved if you wired it to the speakers? If you didn't have an amp or sub? (I watched your videos too lol) Did you ever get in trouble for those window LED's? I could only imagine the police not being too happy with those.

I think it was Mac25 that had some neon tubes inside his car, then someone who was driving in front of him actually pulled over cuz they thought he was a cop :P

He then moved the tubes to his engine bay for coolness

Kenny had them hooked to a switch though, so with the flick he could turn them on or off easily. Still not something I would go as far to do lol

Re: Custom Trunk Lid Liner Project

Yeah, I had them hooked up to a switch

I basically never had them on, they were more of a show off thing around friends than anything
None of my LEDs are hooked up to my amp anymore, they are all hardwired and on a switch. (I still never turn em on =/)

and yes, you can hook em up to your speakers

Re: Custom Trunk Lid Liner Project

First off, you're going to want to remove the little "cage" that they hold the trunk light in
Name: DSC_0818.jpg
Views: 357
Size: 167.3 KB

The way to do this, is either by hand, or a small flathead to pry it out if it doesnt budge
Be kind to it, even though you dont need it, you don't want to break it either
Name: DSC_0819.jpg
Views: 272
Size: 132.4 KB

After you've removed the cage, you're going to want to disconnect the blue clip.

Re: Custom Trunk Lid Liner Project

Once you've removed the blue clip,
You should notice that behind the harness is two wires

One is red, the other is White/Green
The red should be the NEG
And the White/Green should be the POS
Keep that in mind

Look at your LEDs, there are 2 wires,
One is Brown, which should be POS in most cases
The other is Silver, which should be NEG in most cases

So you're going to want to hook the brown one to the White/Green wire.
and the Silver to the Red.

I'm gonna start this off only talking about the Brown + White/Green only. since the procedure is the same for the silver.
I'm gonna do this outside of the car, where I have more room, and light to show you
As I don't have the same colored wiring laying around, we're gonna have to play pretend.

Take the wiring end of your LED and pull the two wires apart somewhat
You're going to have to strip plastic to expose the wiring (A little more than I did, maybe like 1/2 ~1 inch of wiring. You can strip the wires by carefully with a knife, or scissor, just lightly cut around the wire and pull the plastic)
Lets pretend the Black wire with white stripe is your BROWN wire
Do this to both your LEDs
Name: Split.jpg
Views: 301
Size: 14.4 KB

Now that you've done it to both your LED's, You're going to want to combine the two LEDs together, just twist the two BROWN exposed wires together from each LED.
Since your wiring is probably really thin, you probably want to fold it on itself once, twice, or maybe 3 times to get a nice thick chunk of wiring
Do the same for the SILVER wires.
Name: Twist.jpg
Views: 249
Size: 15.8 KB

----------
Now that you've combined your LEDs, heres the messy part where you have to climb in your trunk, and dont have a lot of room to work with.

First thing you want to do is take one of the squeeze connectors, and fit the BROWN wiring towards the back (the one that doesnt go through)
You might want to take some pliers and squeeze it down just to test if your wiring is thick enough to keep it still. if not, you might need to fold the wiring a couple more times to get enough wire to keep it from coming out. You can always open up the squeeze connector again.
Name: Inside.jpg
Views: 315
Size: 29.1 KB

Once you know it's a tight fit, and wont fall out, you're gonna have to climb into your trunk and do this all at once, so pay attention

You're gonna put the BROWN wiring in the back, like in the last step, and in the front of the squeeze connector, you're gonna have to put the White/Green wire inside of it. and clamp down tight.
Name: hooking.jpg
Views: 275
Size: 40.4 KB
Name: clamp.jpg
Views: 245
Size: 29.2 KB

Once you did that successfully, it should look something similar to this
Name: finish.jpg
Views: 310
Size: 33.2 KB

Then just do the same with the SILVER wire
--------------------

After that, the wiring is complete, how you want to mount the LEDs is completely up to you.

Re: Custom Trunk Lid Liner Project

hey civic chicks, i didnt know you put in a sound system in already, did you just put it in/ what deck, speakers and subs you running?

I actually did the same thing as you, i dynamated my trunk and wanted to make it look not so tacky when i open it so i had a friend tell me about acrylic felt. You can get it for $5 a roll at any craft store. I sprayed perm bond adhesivve to it and stuck it to my dynamat and actually worked it in perfect, air tight as can be to the all the crevices in the trunk lid. I put it around the car trim too when the trunk is open.

I can take some pics tommorow if you like. It took me 2hrs just to put the felt on cause i had to cut it and get it perfectly shaped without sticking out. The felt actually does help sound deaden too on top of hiding it.

But i ended up moving my sub permantly to my backseat, much better. No more rattle.

nope, not hard at all.. i think i was more scared of getting shocked for some reason than i was to hook it all up. i called my dad before i put em together and was like, im not gonna get shocked right?! lol.. he's like no. and even if somehow you managed to do that, its only around 12 volts, it'll feel like a sting. lol

so then i was like OK! and did it!

yeah that sounds really cool! i like what i got on there now, its nice and flat and just looks like it belongs there, but i would definetly love to have something like that for the rest of it.. the part thats on the upper part of the trunk.. i just dont like all that silver mess showing.. is that fabric stuff like a dark grey color like what i used? if you wanna take pics, that'd be cool

haha, i bet the sub sounds amazing in the backseat, i just wouldnt want anyone seeing it to get stolen.. lol.. that'd suck. and i have passangers half the time, so i dont think anyone would want a big ol box on their lap. lol

Re: Custom Trunk Lid Liner Project

sticks great! not havin any issues with it yet, and it stuck on there nice when i did em.. i dont think ill have an issue with em.. it didnt feel filmy, or slick, or whatever before i did em, and i also grabbed a piece of tape and taped it there to see how well it stuck.. and it stuck.

so.. so far so good
