Re: DIY: Diagnose manual Tranny Noises (and save some $$$)

my input shaft bearing is making the noise

might as well replace both right? I already have a timing belt water pump and the seals plus some other stuff to have put on my car. 2001 honda civic ex manual, red

You should be able to get your hands on a bearing kit, which has all the bearing replacement parts for our tranny..

I'll let you guys know how much my job will cost.

Re: DIY: Diagnose manual Tranny Noises (and save some $$$)

Hey everyone!

This weekend I started pulling my tranny, I'm about to drop the sub frame, which should be loads of fun /endsarcasm

so anyways can anyone tell me where to get a proper input shaft bearing?

I found a parts site off of google and tried to find it, i think it might be #15 on this page, but I'm only 5% sure it is.

http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...5=MT+MAINSHAFT

Or should I just go to the local honda dealer?

Go to the local dealer. You gotta get fluid and Hondabond anyway.

You have to split the tranny case to replace the bearing.

Re: DIY: Diagnose manual Tranny Noises (and save some $$$)

Right. I knew that...

I'm actually still debating on whether I should split the case myself or just take it to a tranny shop and pay them to do the actual replacing. I'm scared I'll muck something up inside the transmission and everything would be for naught.

People:
Do NOT buy as used tranny for like 3-400 bucks. Total rip off. Is it gonna give you problems? Who knows! its USED.
Should remove the tranny...out the TOP IMO. Plenty of GREAT DIY's on that.
Then take that whack tranny to AMMCO. For $300 flat rate plus parts you get a complete overhaul. Sure, may total 400...even 500. but its still WAY better KNOWING you have all new internals/bearings.
Then just slide it back on, bolt together an hope your weird noise is gone, LOL

Re: DIY: Diagnose manual Tranny Noises (and save some $$$)

Yeah, out the top. Why remove the subframe and need a re-alignment afterward?
Besides, I couldnt imagine balancing a friggin subframe on my chest, while on my back, trying to line up holes in one hand with an impact driver in the other to put it back together. Sounds awkward, IMO.
an naw, im no ammco man, lol. I called and asked 'is there any way you WONT rape me on price' an they said bring in just the tranny, not the car. removal from your car is why it costs 800+

Hey all i am pretty new to these forums bit i have some experience with transmission issues. If you are going to pull the transmission out of the car don't drop the subframe remove all parts on passenger side remove the hood take the exhaust gas recirculation system off then pull the transmission out from the top i can do it in less than an hour now its easier this way then messing areound with the sub frame it will save u time.

Re: DIY: Diagnose manual Tranny Noises (and save some $$$)

Im exagerating a bit i think it was more like one and a half to two with the impact but still its alot faster than trying to remove the subframe and to be honest i have done it three times now and you get quicker every time.

Re: DIY: Diagnose manual Tranny Noises (and save some $$$)

Well about $1800, labour and taxes included, my transmission is no longer making the noise.

The sad part is, I didn't get first gear replaced. I completely forgot how it sometimes grinds, or is hard to engage (shift into). Now when it's really cold (ontario, canada), first gear grinds even when I didn't let go of the clutch yet! Sucks...

rcelefano, you woulda thought that whomever dissasembled your tranny woulda saw a chewed up 1st gear and called to ask if you wanted it fixed too...at least you would hope, LOL, for 1800 friggin dollars!!!

And a 'bearing kit' is a pretty general description...guessing its one for the tranny internals. Meaning the TOB wouldnt have been touched..."mechanics" generally only do what you tell them too, NOTHING more, despite obivious problems. Which is the main reason I decided to join this site and DIY the crap outta everything.

pon55; See I hear ya, but judging by that statement it sounds to me like the gear itself or the synchros between it are chewed up or otherwise deformed...but if dude didnt replace em? Idunno.

TOB would be squeaking or squealing (my spelling sucks) or some sort of noise when you manipulate the clutch pedal itself...theres a thread about it somewheres on this site...

Re: DIY: Diagnose manual Tranny Noises (and save some $$$)

so I have an interesting problem that I haven't been able to get a straight answer from any mechanic on.
for some background, I just had my clutch replaced cause I blew out a friction disc spring. The clutch was replaced with an OEM high Tension clutch. New friction disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and clutch fork. I have a bad motor mount on the upper driver side which has been bad since I got the car. The lower ball joint on the drivers side is going bad. but all this was before the clutch was replaced. The car drove fine, no shake or wobble only the pop coming from the ball joint.
so i got the car back from getting the clutch replaced. the mechanic replaced another bad motor mount he found. now though. i have a plethora of noises and annoying issues.
first off.
when I am on the decel and off the throttle or i disengage the clutch I get a clacking sound that is relative to tire speed. this issue goes away when its warm outside. but comes back after driving for a while but is always there when its even cool outside.
second. I get this horrid shake from 3200rpms to 5400rpms but only in 2nd through 5th gear. and only when i am pressing on the throttle if i let up slightly on the throttle so the car coasts the shake gets very minimal. I cannot recreate this with the car parked in neutral.
lastly.
when i engage the clutch or disengage the clutch. any movement on the clutch at all and i hear a clack when i disengage and a clunk when i engage. not really an issue i figure thats wear in, but i need to know the others.
Thanks guys. any help is much appreciated.

Check the nuts that hold on the caliper, but first the lug nuts.
