DIY: Replacing Backlight Illumination Bulbs

The other day I noticed that many of my buttons/switches do not light up at night. I searched a bit on this forum and only found some of the information I was looking for. So today I removed all the various switches to make some measurements and see if I could find them online. Below are my findings:

Honda OEM Part #s:
1. Cruise Control ON/OFF light (comes with green bulb cover) ------ 35851-S5A-A01
2. Cruise Control Illumination (comes with blue bulb color) ------ 35850-S5A-A01
3. Sunroof/Moonroof Illumination (comes with blue bulb cover) ------ 35850-S5A-003
4. Power Mirror Switch ------ 35190-S5A-J01ZC
5. Heater Controls Illumination (Quantity 2, no bulb covers) ------ 39397-SA5-003
6. Recirc, A/C, Rear Defrost Illumination (Quantity 2, no bulb covers) ------ 79609-S5A-003

The above parts should all be the bulb and the socket (and bulb cover if applicable), except for the power mirror switch. The power mirror switch does not have a removable bulb socket. Instead the light is soldered to the small PCB inside. Therefore, if you can't solder a new bulb in or don't have access to a soldering iron, you have to buy the whole switch.

The cost for all these bulbs should be around $30 depending on your dealer costs, plus shipping. Because these parts are so small and delicate, an extra handling charge will probably be added. For me, everything came to a little under $40 not including the power mirror switch. With the switch included, everything would cost me about $100. A little steep just to replace some bulbs, right?

Removing all the bulbs, I made some measurements. Here's what I found:

1. Cruise, sunroof/moonroof, and power mirror bulbs:
- 0.120" dia, T1 size
- 0.280" long
- 0.3125" socket dia
- 0.228" socket height

2. Heater control bulbs:
- 0.185" dia, T1-1/2 size
- 0.462" socket dia
- 0.260" socket height

3. Recirc, A/C, rear defrost bulbs:
- 0.164" dia, T1-1/4 size
- 0.387" socket dia
- 0.627" socket height

ALL these bulbs are 14V. The cruise, sunroof/moonroof, and power mirror bulbs should all be 60 mA according to Honda dealer websites. The heater controls and buttons should all be 100 mA. All the bulbs are removable from their sockets except for the two for the heater control *****...I couldn't seem to remove those for some reason. It's as if the bulbs were glued in the socket or something. But removal for the rest was simply unwrapping the wires from the grooves in the socket and pulling the bulb out.

The website I found for everything was bulbtown.com. I really liked this site as there were educational videos, many options to choose from, and seemed to have everything I needed. Since I couldn't remove the bulbs from the heater control **** sockets, I just bought the socket/bulb assemblies. The name of the socket type is Neo-wedge. They happened to have the exact size according to my measurements. I couldn't find the right socket size for the recirc, A/C, and rear defrost buttons. The sockets are rather long so they are a bit unusual. For everything else, I just bought the bulbs and bulb covers (if applicable). Because they were so inexpensive, I bought an extra set of each in case I mess up on re-installation or I need to do this again sometime soon. All the bulbs were 14V rated, but the current ratings were not exact matches to OEM. The bulbs for the heater control ***** were 140 mA instead of 100mA. And then the recirc, A/C, and rear defrost bulbs were only 80 mA. So there's going to be some difference in brightness, but at least everything will light up at night.

The total cost for everything was under $20, including shipping. I have yet to actually receive everything to see if it all works, but that's quite the cost difference! Much more reasonable . I'll make a follow-up post to discuss any issues or concerns with the re-installation. If all goes well, I'll post all the part #s from the website.

Re: DIY: Replacing Backlight Illumination Bulbs

So I received all the bulbs from Bulbtown. It came well packaged and all was good. Installation went well. Everything was a good fit and all lights work as expected. My only gripe would be that the switches near the driver's pocket appear to be a different color than those for the heater controls. Perhaps I should've gotten solid blue bulb covers instead of the blue-white. Also, the Hazard light went out after all the jostling around. That bulb is another T1 and the socket appeared to be just like those for the cruise, sunroof/moonroof, and power mirror switches.

Below are the part numbers and quantities:
1. 8111 -- T1 miniature wire terminal bulbs, quantity 5
2. 39-02-6A -- Blue-white bulb cover for T1 wire terminal bulbs, quantity 3
3. 39-02-4A -- Green bulb cover for T1 wire terminal bulb, quantity 1
4. ENW1-EW87-GRA-12MM -- Neo-wedge socket with T1-1/2 bulb, quantity 2
5. 8640 -- T1-1/4 miniature wire terminal bulb, quantity 2

Keep in mind that I re-used the neo-wedge sockets for the cruise, sunroof/moonroof, power mirror, and hazard switches as well as the longer sockets for the recirc, A/C, and rear defrost buttons.

Hopefully this thread will help anyone new to Civics how the backlighting is supposed to look and what to do if it's not right. If you do it the way I did it, you'll spend much less money than buying from the dealer and everything should light up nicely at night
