Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

The pictures show below were not taken by the person that wrote this, they are just a guide and do not necessarily correspond to the text written here. Please note that this is for the EX, other models are similar though. Also be cautioned that the top mounting depth is about 2 1/8". You may be able to put a spacer in. Here's how:

Remove screw inside door handle.
Pop out the cover using a very small flat screwdriver from the front and remove the screw using a phillips.

Use small flat to pop open the cover inside the door latch.
Remove two phillips screws there.

Detach door latch by prying out from front,
and detach door latch connecting rod from clip by first unclipping it,
then popping the rod out from underneath.

Remove power window switch panel (front of entire door handle).
Contrary to earlier reports, it is not necessary to remove the rubberized rear section of that.
Pop out the front of the handle, and slide forward. Remove the two screws you see in picture 3.

Use panel popper to pry out tweeter section (if equipped) from hypotenuse of triangular piece.
Let tweeter mount hang.

Pull with fingers by inserting into front bottom of door panel (there is a space there)
and give it a good tug.

Remove remaining clips by using the panel popper.
Insert panel popper between clip and door, and use leverage.

Lift rear end of panel first, and then slowly work towards the front. Unplug all power accessories connected to door panel.

You will now see the speaker mounted on the door. Insert panel popper into the slot located
at the top of the speaker frame and press down. Pull top half of speaker away from door slowly
until the metal clip has cleared the door. Lift lower half of speaker upwards.

I bought my JBL GTO620s from an independent retailer, and thus had to do modifications myself.
My speakers are mounted on the plastic frame provided with speakers. These frames are used to hold
the speaker grills provided for the aftermarket speakers. The hole provided by Honda for the stock speaker
is of a weird shape, so using the frame gave me the necessary clearance to mount the speaker.
The problem is not so much the speaker mounting depth, but more of the small hole provided. Once
you remove the stock speaker, you'll know what i mean.
For those replacing the radio as well, I highly recommend the kit from

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

check crutchfield.com (put in your car info) or call them. they can find you all the sizes for your car. i think its still 6.5 in the front and 6x9 in the rear.

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

i was looking into getting new speakers for the front, in the doors.. but i just hate how the whole panel covers the speaker! its not a problem takin the panel off to change it or anything, but if you wanna show it off, your kinda screwed. if get a nice speaker, i want the cover it comes with over it, showin it off and what not.. you might as well buy somethin cheap, and put it in, and tell everyone its top of the line, cuz guess what? they cant see it! ugh.. just sucky. wish there was a way to have a different door panel.. o well :-/

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

I remember my 89' Montero. Four screws would get you to the speakers, and you can do it sitting down not bending over at all. heh that Montero had a smaller engine then our civics!

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

wish u could still do that with ours.. they got some good lookin speakers now.. kinda like an engine.. yeah, of course you can show it off by revin it up, blowin past people, and talkin about it.. but, you know you wanna pop the hood and let em see right? that's what i meant by "showin it off" ^ up there. but instead, you can buy the best, and talk all about em, and they're stuck behind these plastic panels. whatever.. cant really change it so oh well i guess..

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

today I purchased a pair of JL TR650CXI's as well as the matching 6x9s for the rear. I'm starting to worry that the mounting depth is too deep to fit in the door panels!! ACK! Can a spacer work in this case? All i really want to know is if I should just take them back and find something compatible on Crutchfield. Thanks for the help!!

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

a spacer will usually work fine. you can go upto 1 inch thick and if needed cut off the inner plastic lip of the door panel speaker grill behind the panel for more clearance. this allows more room without affecting how it looks from the front. not sure why honda even did that as it serves no purpose. when you have the panel off and look behind the speaker hole part, you will see what i mean. just get a utility knife and shave it off.

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

Thanks gearbox I'm literally breathing a sigh of relief! Now I read somewhere else there may not be enough space for the 6x9s because of the trunk spring? And I thought modding out a Honda and a CIVIC no less would be childs play lol but no.....

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

for the rears, you could buy the honda trunk shocks that normally are included when you install the spoiler. they replace the original rod setup and give all the clearance you need.

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

Nice pickup, glad you did a little searching before asking your questions.

You def might need a spacer in the front for most speakers

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

yes i'm thinking this too....the mounting depth i believe for these speakers is 2.44" so say a half inch spacer or do i need to be exact? I'm thinking I might just return the rears...sounding like a huge undertaking already with just the fronts!! lol thanks for the help guys I will be sure to let you all know how it goes

Lol, in all honesty, it seems complicated on paper, when you get down to it, its probably a 15 minute job at most, if you have all your tools

I'm pretty sure i just used these

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

you could go 3/4 inch spacer to be sure they fit. and you wouldnt have to trim inside the door panel for that. even 1 inch you may not have to. the goal is to not have the window hit the speaker when you roll it down.

Re: Removing Door Panel and Adding New Speakers

the thing with making them, which is possible using a piece of mdf and the right tools, is they have to be waterproof. if it ever rains or you get a car wash, that area will get wet and rot the wood over time. plastic spacers are ideal.

Sedans dont have a place to put tweeters, So I would just purchase a coaxial speaker, the ones with the tweeters inside em.

you could also surface mount the tweeters to the sedan sail panels. thats what i did when i had a stereo installed. mine were infinity reference and they fit perfectly.
