mice or squirrels chewing the wiring of the car might be a possible cause.
asking this question without even going to a shop will yield no responses in here, too broad a question.
and yeah, a friend actually had the trouble i mentioned, so it is a true statement.

About 2 months ago I replaced the Alternator. It wasn't charging the battery and the Tach..,
Speedo., Odom.... entire cluster was not working. Once the Alt. Was replaced everything
In the cluster began working again. 2 weeks ago the tach stopped workinging. The needle
does not move off zero.I did not check the bolts, I did check the belt and the belt is tight.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
