My son has a 2004 Honda Civic that has 105,000 miles on it. It hasn't had any problems until now. The accelerator, gas pedal, seems to be sticky, resistant ---causing a problem in accelerating to get on a highway for example. You push on the gas pedal seemingly with enough pressure to gradually accelerate. But you can not get the fine tuned graduated acceleration that you would expect, and that you get when accelerating other cars. You depress the gas pedal with seemingly enough pressure to increase your acceleration but it doesn't respond, so you have to press harder and it might go faster than you expected. It's just not fine tuned gradual acceleration like other newer cars. Does this make sense. Does anyone know what the problem is. It could cause an accident in my opinion when you need a certain amount of gas to accelerate quickly and the gas pedal just doesn't respond as you would expect it to. Thank you.

It happens when accelerating between 30mph and 60mph. Like when want to go a few more miles per hr. like from 35mph to 40mph or 40 mph to 45 mph in a short amount of time. Like to accelerate to get on a highway. You might want to go from 40mph to 50mph quickly so you avoid being hit as you get on the highway but the amount of acceleration only goes to 45mph instead of 50mph, so you give the car more gas and it takes too long to accelerate, or you go faster than you want to, to get on the highway. It's like you can not anticipate the increase in the rate of speed that you will get by pressing on the gas pedal with a certain amount of pressure. Thankyou.

is the gas pedal physically not pressing and coming back smoothly? you can try that with the car turned off. if its sticking or having trouble being pressed, you may need to lube the pedal latch and the cable, it may have gunk on it where it connects to the throttle body. also check the slack of the cable. it may need to be tightened. if its too loose, there will be dead space in the pedal so when you press it a little, nothing happens. the stock spec i believe is 1/2 inch of slack when you move the throttle cable back and forth. dont do too tight or you will have idle issues.
