I have the same problem as of last night. My wipers will not turn off. How does one replace the Wiper Motor Assembly?

Re: wiper won't turn off

The windshield wiper motor on a 1998 Honda Civic sits underneath the hood of the car and is mounted to the firewall. The motor controls the function and movement of the windshield wipers. While there is no service life for the Civic's wiper motor, it will need to be replaced when the motor starts to hesitate. The motor looks like a small canister. Replacement motors can be purchased from most auto parts stores or directly from a Honda dealership.
Difficulty:Moderately EasyInstructions

Things You'll Need
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
Suggest Edits
  1.
    • 1 Open the hood and unplug the electrical connector from the wiper motor.

    • 2 Unbolt the two bolts that hold the wiper motor to the firewall.

    • 3 Pull the wiper motor off the linkage assembly.

    • 4 Slide the new wiper motor into place and secure it with the factory mounting bolts using a socket wrench.

    • 5 Reconnect the factory electrical connector to the wiper

Re: wiper won't turn off

Thanks Gunner. Is it advisable to replace the switch first, or replace the motor instead?
thanks again....

Re: wiper won't turn off

If it is the switch i would do that first..

.also check your connections make sure they are not crossed or shorted before you actually replace the motor or switch..

Re: wiper won't turn off

How can I tell if the switch is a problem or if the motor is the problem?
My wipers respond in all positions except the off position. I drove around for a while (with the wipers stuck in the on position of course, the first speed) and after some time the wiper gets stuck near the bottom position now and then. If I change to the next speed it will become unstuck. I just priced the switch and it was about $120 at Bridge auto parts. In any case I will look online to save $$.

Re: wiper won't turn off

There's only 3 things it could be- the switch, the motor, or a bad wire/connection. Do you have a multi-meter and know how to use it? If so, find MelJ and download the service manual from his sig and diagnose for a faulty wiper switch.

OEM switch is number 10: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/index...ATION%20SWITCH and takes about 10 minutes to replace.

OEM motor is number 5: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/index...IPER%20%281%29

I'd look for one at the salvage yard first or look here for nationwide salvage listings: http://www.car-part.com/
