my radiator cooling fan not working,what I did so far is;
hook up fan directly to battery(it works).
changed sensor fan switch located on thermostat cover.
changed relay.
checked 20amp fuse(it"s ok).
this is my sons 1997 civic EX 1.5 and I should be at work right now . any help app.

what is the outside temp? the cooling fan will not come on unless the engine is in danger of overheating. usually temps below 80F will never turn the fan on. have you checked the coolant temp when the car is hot? if its above 200F and the fan still isnt working, then there is a problem. seems like you changed everything related to the fan system already.

The concern for the fan began when the car is going up steep grade and raises the gauge to almost red line.
pulled over to ck the engine compartment and
noticed fan not running. ran the heater on full and temp.
lowered. engine has good comp. and well maint.
no discolor of exhaust and idles smoothly without
any abnormal noises.
is it possible that after flushing the system and good radiator
that the engine temp is normal now and fan wont come on?

hmm its possible. the fan really doesnt do much to prevent overheating. usually its caused by something else. its possible when you flushed the system, you did not bleed all the air bubbles out of the coolant. air pockets can cause sensors to not work properly, including giving a false engine temp reading. it can also cause overheating if there is air in the engine spaces. its very important to jack up the front of the car and run the heater on full for upto 30 mins with the rad cap removed so air can come out.

Iam applying your comments to this problem and have completed the task of puting on front ramps,lifting front end and running fo a while. drove the civic 97 and still overheats going up a long hill
appx. 2miles long. can we deduce that the fan is needed in this
load environment?
if you feel this is the way to go , what next to get the fan working?

thanks for your help,problem still exists with cooling fan.
what is the best way to wire the cooling fan to a toggle switch on the dashboard?
so it runs when driver sees the temp gauge going up.

you prolly need to make a relay harness using thick enough wire to support the amp draw. those fans use a ton of power. basically what you would do for the headlights, running them off the battery and a switched relay that activates off a low voltage signal wire.

I understand that the signal wire from the sensor fan switch located on the thermostat cover opens the relay
next to the battery, the relay and associated wiring can handle the load.
where do I pull from and do I need anything more than a fuse link and #12 wire to set up
the toggle on the dash?
alsoo , any thoughts about why the fan doesn't work?
I do understand that many people use this forum , so this is the last time Ill bother you with this.

Are you sure you changed the correct sensor and not the sending unit sensor for the gauge?

Ive asked that ? at the parts store 6 times and each time I got the feeling that
their is a possibility that they didnt know.
I looked at the online Honda parts exploded view of the cooling system.
it looks like # 8 on the diagram is the one, the part descriptions are similar.
which one is it.?
the chore list goes on and on...

fan sensor should be #12 in this pic, the one that goes in the thermostat cover. you can tap a switch directly to the fan wiring but make sure your switch is rated to pull that many amps.

I replaced sensor in# 12
I have a heavy amp toggle to direct wire the fan, to bad I cant figure it out.
my son will most likely leave the fan running when He goes to work
and Ill go help him jump his car.

for now, you can just splice the switch in next to the fan. then he can pop the hood and flip the switch when leaving the car.

I change the coolant temp sensor, fan still not working. I had the timing belt and water pump replaced by a mechanic, he can't make the fan work too. i give up, im planning to just put a switch for the fan on my dash, so i can just turn it on from there once the temp goes up.

Anybody done this switch? Where are the wires hook up, direct from the wire or splice it from the switch fan sensor?
