Re: Need help connecting under car led to dome light

your better off hooking it to your cigarette lighter and adding a on off switch close by.

Re: Need help connecting under car led to dome light

I JUST put all the wiring in for interior LEDs in my car last night. I originally wanted to do the dome light thing too, then i changed my mind to have them come on with the parking lights. then i realized that it's much simpler to wire them to the cigarette lighter and a fuse and switch, that's what i did. Don't need to worry about blowing fuses if i add more lights to this wiring now. I recommend doing it this way.

you need a relay or you'll burn up the wiring on your dome light (i know from experience)

you gotta be careful doing that. depending on how much current your lights pull, you can burn up the stock wires unless you use a relay. ask me how i know.....

if you use led lights it wouldn't draw too much current right?

depends on the LED. a standard LED is around 20mA. super bright LED's can pull 85mA to 250mA each. so if you had a strip of super brights, you can easily start pulling several amps.

Re: Need help connecting under car led to dome light

Holy crap, why make it so complicated?
Most car LED lighting are prewired 12v (Including Street Glow)

Simple way?
Hook up a line to positive on car batt to switch (Toggle, or button)
Switch to pos of LED wire
Hook up Negative to a bolt on chasis.

Route the switch to somewhere inside the cabin

---------------
The downside? You may have to drill a hole through your firewall under steering wheel to allow wires to reach battery
If you have an speaker amps, you can tap into the 12v power cable (simply by wrapping the positive wire to the 12v power cable)

///////////////////
Half arsed diagram:
[Battery]++++++Switch+++++Pos LED Wire
[Chassis]--------------------Neg LED Wire

OR
[12V Source]++++++++++++++Switch+++++++++++Pos LED Wire
[Chassis/Ground Source]----------------------------Neg LED Wire

Hope that helps
I've been hooking up LEDs inside my car all the time
Heres a vid of me hooking up LEDs to amp to beat to music

it doesn't get much simpler that a schematic. if you can't understand the schematic, you probably shouldn't be trying to do this yourself. you might want to get some help.

There is an adapter behind the dome light (You might have to take apart some of the roof to access it)

Plug the positive end of your lights to the positive of the adapter, same for negative
Depending on how you do it, you can have your original dome light on, or off
------
I did this to my trunk light and LED's turn on when trunk is open
Let me know if you need more help on this

Re: Need help connecting under car led to dome light

LED's will never pull 15 amps lol
If you're scared, you can always replace with a 30 amp fuse

no no no no no no no!!!!!!!

the wires are sized for 15A. if you put a bigger fuse in than was designed, you can exceed the capacity of the wires and start a fire. don't ever replace a fuse with a larger one.

I was told to replace my 15A headlight fuse with 30A when i switched over to HID
Doesn't seem to be any problems so far

whoever told you that is a ABSOLUTE MORON!!!!!!!! HID kits need a relay harness powered from the battery so you don't burn up the factory wiring.

Well, in any case, i doubt any neon/LED lights will pull 15 amps anyways

it really all depends on what you have and how many you have...........

i've measured 12" strips at 3A each before. so if you had 4, that would be 12A. that can easily start blowing fuses if you're not using relays.

Re: Need help connecting under car led to dome light

Hi.

I have mounted som led under my car also and i have made my lights run from battery to a wiring box with switches and outputs to the led strips. But i want my leds to go on when the dome light is lit. My dome light goes on when i open and lock my car so i want it to work with that. Does anyone know if there is a point in the dash i can find wires i can hack into and install a relay? i have a Civic 2002 4dr sedan. I would prefer not to pull the roof and hook something up there. i have my controller box in the dash also so it would be best with a short route... Hope someone can answer :-)

Edit.

Found some wiring setup for my car but it dont include dome lights...

Re: Need help connecting under car led to dome light

finally got around to doing this to my door marker lights yesterday. running wires thru the door was a huge pain, but the rest was pretty easy. i ran most of the wiring under the carpet on the floor to hide it and so i wouldnt have to take apart anything. the two wires you need to tap are wht/blu (constant power) and grn/red (mcu switched ground). if you look under the driver sdie dash on the left where the keyless entry module is (around the cruise/mirror button area), you should see a grey connector. these are the wires you want. they are coming from the driver side pillar and down to the connector. unplug the connector and tap the two wires coming down before the plug. you need to unwrap the grey tape around the wiring. once youre tapped, run the wiring and plug it in. be careful, the power is a constant on fused lead so you will blow the fuse if you touch it to ground. the grn/red is only a ground when the door opens, so it will work only when the doors open. note: whatever you wire this way will come on every time the door is opened and will fade like the stock dome light does. but you cannot turn them off by switching the dome light to OFF position. that only works for the domelight and not what you hard wired to the mcu. be very careful as mentioned above, you can easily blow your multiplex unit if you pull too many amps. im using luxer1 led bulbs for all my interior lighting so i draw only 2w for four separate interior lights instead of 23w.
