how do you properly reset the ecu

ive looked at multiple sites and have gotten multiple answers like disconnect the battery and pump the brakes ten times then connect the battery and let idle till warm, connect battery and go to 3000rpms for 2 minutes ,drive on roads and highway for half an hour while turning on all electrical accessories . plus many more so what's the proper way ????

Re: how do you properly reset the ecu

1. drive car til its warmed up.
2. turn car off, disconnect battery or pull FI ECU fuse out.
3. put fuse back, start car, close hood
4. make sure all accessories are off, do not press any gas or brake
5. just let the car idle for 10 mins by itself
6. turn car off, then back on, and go for a drive like you normally do. it will take usually one tank of gas to completely relearn the fuel trims.

this is basically how the honda service manual says to do it. and its only done to correct idle problems caused by tinkering and taking apart intake throttle body and related sensors. this really is called "idle learn" procedure, which is essentially what you are doing by relearning the idle speed of 700 rpms.

Re: how do you properly reset the ecu

whatever you normally use. our cars were meant for 87 octane anyways. you don't want to "idle learn" your car for 91 when you pump 87 in it everyday.

Re: how do you properly reset the ecu

the motor runs best on 87 octane and makes more power while operating cleaner. using the wrong octane will cause the ecu to adjust the timing and you will get worse power and mileage while clogging the engine with carbon buildup since 89-93 is too hard for our low compression motor to burn properly.

heres the fuse

That Fuse is F6, not F1, on my 2001 7th Gen Civic EX.

You need to let it sit overnight, or hold the brakes until the light goes out. Just pulling it and putting it back in will not erase anything. I have always been told to pull the battery cable not the fuse.

False: High octane gas is not harmful to a low compression engine, it is a waste a money though. Just use what the manual says and you will be good.

So what is the correct method of resetting the ecu or which method did you end up using? i know this is an old tread but i just made the mistake of buying a 2001 civic lx as an emergency "temporary" but end up having to keep it

Re: how do you properly reset the ecu

i did gearboxs method just disconnected the battery for about 60 min. either way your car will eventually learn itself, this method just takes less time for the computer to re-learn.

So you are saying that all you gotta do is disconnect the whole battery and leave it off for 60 minutes and that will reset it
