hey guys
my car is almost hitting 30,000 miles now, and i just called a honda dealer to schedule for the 30,000 mile service and they said it costs $396. now i think this is pretty expensive... for the 22,500 service maintenance i paid $100. do you guys think this service maintenance is neccessary? i think $400 for oil change/ plus whatever they do is kinda expensive. please give me some advice. i just scheduled for a regular oil change, for now.

Here's what the Honda website recommends at 30,000:

Services to be performed:
Replace engine oil.
Rotate tires.
Inspect and adjust drive belts.
Replace air conditioning filter.
Replace air cleaner element.

Not worth $400 IMO. I'd find out exactly what they are going to perform.

i just had my 30K mile maintenance a lil while ago and it cost like $250 w/ my 15% "Preferred Customer" discount for buying the car at that same dealer...even that is too expensive if you ask me

I have had 3 hondas in the past and now my 4th, the k2 civic. I have never done any of the services except the ones where they change the belts. I change the oil at regular intervals like everyone else, and do the small things like changing the tranny and radiator fluids. The civic doesn't even get anything important done until 60k. Mainly, they change the oil and charge you the other 300bucks to check and lube stuff. It is not necessary and provides the dealer with a huge profit margin. However, if it makes ya feel better, go right ahead.


I just bought my civic last week brand new from hendrick honda. I initially bought a sevice plan for 480 bucks that covered all the services until 55k. I got home and looked at my owner's manual and discovered something very shocking. The first somewhat major service comes at 60k. At 30k they change your filters and stuff. I went back and took that off my loan, needless to say. These cars don't require nearly as much maintinace as they once did. Just change your oil at the dealer and replace the filters when you are there and such. You are paying for them to check stuff. The only good thing is they may find something wrong. These cars weren't made in heaven, but they are hondas for crying out loud.

well what we do at our dealership for 30k is, replace oil, filter, sparkplugs, cap and rotor (not on 2k1 though), tranny fluid, brake fluid, disassemble brakes....clean and lube, rotate and balance all 4 tires, inspection of everything else on the car (ex: boots, exhaust, suspension, belts, cooling system, ect)....quoted 4 hrs and our labor rate is only $67/hr so about $270.

Thats what you are going to pay @ the dealership. They can charge more because they think that honda owners think they need to bring there car there.

I agree that it's not worth it either. Belts, buy an OEM part yourself and let a garage do it. Other stuff that you cannot do like set timing, valve clearance, find an independent Honda Service shop, there's one in Monterey Park, thank goodness. Saved me more than a penny here and there. Just about every thing else is DIY, like oil change, tranny fluid change, air filter, a/c filter, spark plugs, pcv valve, change coolant, thermostat, rotate tires, fuel filter,...

I do them all myself, my car has only seen the dealer for warranty repairs (rattle rattle and more rattle)

I do get all my work done at the honda dealer. An oil change is 19.99 here in charlotte and they take better car of your car than say jiffy lube (I had a bad experience with brake fluid getting sprayed all over my car, and just a general disregard of care for my car). They rotate my tires when I need it and change the tranny fluid. I don't like the little services like say a 7500 service because all they do is check stuff. Everything I get done can easily be done by the average do it yourselfer. I just don't want to spend the time doing it or disposing of the old fluids.

One good thing about getting the work done at the honda dealer, especially the major services like a belt change, is simply that it was done at the dealer. It looks good on honda paper, and it sends a message to prospective buyers when and if you decide to sell the car. Plus, you know if something doesn't go right, the dealer usually will take care of it without much fuss.

Plus, remember noone knows your honda better than the dealer, no pun intended. These guys work on hondas everyday and hondas only. They know them inside and out and can diagnose problems quickly. Also, compare an oem honda part to a pep boys part and you will see a big difference in quality.

Man that price is high I need to get mine in to I will wait till the summer so they can flush the system and get it ready for the summer heat.

oh my god, thats crazy
i would just find out everything that needs to be done, but the parts from honda, or wherever u can get it, and just do it yourself
most of the stuff is easy stuff, like oil, fluids etc.
