Question 1st oil change for low mileage car

I have very low mileage on my 9 month old 2005 Civic right now (2300 miles) since I only use it mostly for weekends. When should I bring it in for the 1st oil change?

The original factory oil is still in it and from reading other posts it is best to leave it in for the first 5000 miles.

My car will be 1 year old in March '06. Should I get the oil changed at that time (1 year mark) even thought it may not have reached 5000 miles?

Yeah, you should change it either at the recommended miles or less, or in 6 months, which ever comes first. In your case 6 months, and plus your car is new, so you should change it soon, because new cars tend to have more junk in the oil from removing all the metal shavings if any out of the holes when new. (People usually change their oil early for new cars)

first oil change is always very important, because it's a new engine it needs break in, so there will be lots of metal shavings, you should follow the instruction to change it as soon as you get to the milage suppose to be.

Use Valvoline Max Life. Yes it is a oil made for higher milage engines, but it uses the same stuff to protect older engines as Honda use to "break in" you engine, and that's moly. Use this then in 6 months go to your oil choice, what ever that is. Just make sure to change it every 6 months from now on. Considering how much you drive I would go to a dino oil, since you will never see the adavantage of synthetic oils (which is higher milage between oil changes).

If you don't mind what performance oil costs and only getting econo oil, yeah go for it!

Honda OEM oil = $3 a quart
Castrol syntec blend = $2 a quart at Walmart... same stuff, but more money at Honda, who would have thought

Cool

Follow the instructions in your manual 1st change not before 8000km/5000miles. As it's special break in oil. My Dealer told me likewise, and added it's OK and will not void the warranty to wait till 9000kms for 1st change. Apparently a longer breakin period is good. It is important to not rush the 1st. Following 1st oil change (Shedule A) The more often you change your oil, obviously, the better, after all oil is the life blood of your car. Just like with other things in life, the 1st time is the most important, so don't rush it!

5w-20 honda motor oil + filter after 5000 miles or within 6 months.
then you run that for another good 5000 miles and change to whatever you like.

Im predicting that my car will have about 2700 miles when the 1 year mark is up. I should have the 1st oil change no matter what the mileage because its been there for 1 year?

It will probably take me 1 more year to reach 5000. I mean should I leave the original oil in for 2 years?

Oil is generally only good for 6 months, I'm not sure about the factory oil though. I would stick to changing it every 6 months unless you get the extended life oil, which really isn't cheaper, but it is sometimes worth to just worry about it once a year. I think it was around $50 to use the mobil 1 extended life in my towing truck, which sees about 2,000-3,000 miles a year. It is a little cheaper to use normal oil and change it every 6 months, but I would rather pay the extra and just do it once a year... do what you want, but follow the manufacture suggestion on the oil container.
