Just curious if every one understands that the lower the number the darker the tint. The % isn't how much light it allows thru it is how much light it blocks. Example 5% tint only allows 5% of the light to be transmitted thru to the inside witch is near jet black and 70% would allow 70% of the light thru witch is not mutch different than a factory car window.
You stated: "The % isn't how much light it allows thru it is how much light it blocks. Example 5% tint only allows 5% of the light to be transmitted thru to the inside"
^slawek is correct. i was confused myself as the shop rated their tint as 100% the darkest. but in most cases, the lower the percentage, the darker the tint gets.
btw, in california, no tint is allowed on the front windshield or front side windows. only 95% is allowed if its approved by government standards (which is the factory tint that all vehicles have)
on most cars windshields there is a marking on the upper left when looking at it from the inside. It's about 4in down. that is the lowest the tint can go if you have that marking.
i think the laws are stupid. in Missouri the tint level is 35%, i got 5 on the front and 0 the rest of the way. i've been pulled over 3 times and only ticketed once. i think it pretty stupid for A) when they write the ticket it says that it a obstruction to the drivers view. and B) you are always seein people drivin around with clothes hangin in their windows or if a window is messed up they got a black plastic bag over it or tape. You can still see through 5% a lot better than you can a suit coat. i liked the link tho i've been lookin around for one like it also.
Ok, I gotta question... I'm going to register my car in NY but live in VA and will be getting 5% tints all the way around. Is it out of Virginia police jurisdiction to ticket me even though they aren't leagal for the state I'm registered? I've heard conflicting stories.

Thanks alot for posting this! You get a rep... i had my car done with 30% all the way around w/slight reflectiveness while i was in Germany... paid an arm and a leg for it, but when i came back to the US when i left the Army... the cops in PA told me i had to take it off... went to my local tuner shop and they told me they thought it was only down to 35% allowed... btw the cops made me rip it off and take my car to the station for inspection a week later! I ripped off all but the rear window! And i didn't have to! No worries though... i'll just get it put back on and keep a copy of the chart in my ride.

I had 2.5% all around and 5% down the whole front glass and they passed a law in the Virgin Islands stating 35% all around ...I just took the windshield off and I drive with my sun roof up
I used to have 5% on my ranger all the way around and strip at top of windshield and in ohio it (at the time) stated 50% on the doors, I rolled around with the windows down (didn't drive it in winter) and when it rained I of course had them up. Most cops don't like to stand in the rain so unless you give them a good reason most cops will just leave you alone.
Oh and I want to apologize for my post earlier in this thread I did contradict myself, but it looks like most everyone understood after a little clarification. Sorry about that.
