its not 169 bucks.. thats the statute, yes im fighting it, the fine is actually $85 but heres a question i pose for you, if it was truely obstructed, how did he get the plate year?
I hate cops that write tickets for a quota, they keep raising the quota in WDM so they are always pulling people over for small stuff, but I am at college in Pella now so its all good.

the only reason i can think that the officer wrote the ticket for falls under this subsection of the law...
Subd. 7. Plate fastened and visible. All plates must
be securely fastened so as to prevent them from swinging. The
person driving the motor vehicle shall keep the plate legible
and unobstructed and free from grease, dust, or other blurring
material so that the lettering is plainly visible at all times.
It is unlawful to cover any assigned letters and numbers or the
name of the state of origin of a license plate with any material
whatever, including any clear or colorless material that affects
the plate's visibility or reflectivity.
What that means is he couldnt read the plate due to the license plate frame, but if thats so you should still contest it cause all the car dealerships put license plate frames on your car before you drive off the lot.

through your drivers license. Its a nationwide system called NCIC. has all information on vehicles and drivers of the vehicle. you can get a tag number and the date it expires from the drivers information(if they are the owner) and from the vin number.
I know that the Ontario law states that the entire plate must be visible. This includes both the numbers, validation sticker, and the province.
My advise to you is to request a court date and most importantly, submit a request for disclosure. You will recieve a copy of the officers notes. The beuaty of this request is two fold.
1. by reading his notes you can anticipate what his evidence is and thus, plan your strategy for defence.
2. if the officer fails to disclose in time, you may have the ticket thrown out. (keep a copy of your request).
For a small ticket item like this, the officer may not even bother to go through the hassle, and theres always a very good chance that he wont appear in court.
You have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Let him do all the work.
(I shudda been a lawyer!)
