is it illegal to change these to different colors? like red, blue?

Red would be legal!!!! As long as you have red to the rear and you can read your license plate at least 50ft away at night your fine. but anything other then white red or amber you would be pushing it.

Ontario law states that the rear licence plate light must be white ONLY. Those neon lights that surround the rear plate are also illigal.
Im sure this doesnt matter to you, but I figure i'd post this info just in case someone in Canuck land was intersested.

NOTE. Licence plates on husky drawn sleds, canoes, and moose are not required.
