Federal Crime Question (nothing doing with cars)

I purchased something from someone in Indonesia, a cell phone. The price was $500 even USD. I sent a $500 check that was cashed there and the person fell off the face of the planet. Is this a federal crime? What can I do?

no thats not a federal crime. You need to contact your local police dept. and file a police report with them and let them look into the matter. Thats Fraud, but i dont think in this case it would be federal.

Was is KWALID ZAMIR and did he want you to open a bank account so you could deposit his family's money after they were run out of Uganda?

Seriously...why would you send someone $500 and not have any protections against them taking the money and running? There are enuf escrow services out there on the web that will hold the money for the transaction for a small fee...

No it wasn't those stupid email scams. It was a Ebay auction, some of my friends and I pruchased some electronic equipment that a guy claimed he was selling in bulk because his store went out of buisness. Ebay isnt doing a piss poor job helping us.

I think I am in trouble... What can I do - apparently since we did it outside of the auction there is nothing we can do... We willingly sent the money.
