Can anyone burn DVD movies?

Just wondering if anyone had hookups to burnt DVD movies here.

I would like to try it on my new Home Theatre system to test the quality of back-ups.

PM me if you can hook me up.

I've never tried it.. My dad has a DVD burner in his laptop and I guess DVD burners for PCs are major cheap.. Like 250 bux gets you a pretty good one!
I think it would be worth it regardless of the quality, although the quality will be just as good because it's not being compressed anymore (ie: DivX, Mpeg). The only way you MAY come across loss of quality is from copying a DVD. And that would only happen because it'd be like another step. It's kindof like making a tape of a tape of a tape! Or how about using a fiberglass kit to make a copy over and over.. But I don't think it'd be noticable anyway.
If you do some seaching on the net you'll find how to burn DVDs properally. The only problem is, if your home theatre system will PLAY a burned cd. If it works like a burned VCD, you may have to copy the DVD to your harddrive then burn it with something that makes it like a boot disk.

I hope this helped you a little bit. I'm gonna try burning a DVD sometime when I'm not busy just to see what it's like.. I've done a few DivX's and those were fairly easy. Anyway, goodluck!

Jason

my friend can... he burned me a couple of movies... and they work GREAT on my system... its basically the EXACT same thing...

i guess it all depends on how stable your system is when you're ripping the file onto your harddrive... and the speed you burn at... because you always want stability over speed... well in my opinion anyway...

Exactly.. If you burn too fast and it does a shallow burn, it will be unstable. I've burned a couple audio cds really fast and they skipped alot because of this.

Mario, normal DVD movies these days are DVD-9, i.e., double-sided DVDs that hold about 8GB worth of data. DVD-R and +R media are one-sided and holds only 4.7GB (DVD-5). So you can't realistically burn a DVD movie with exactly the same quality.

That said, there are software out there like DVDXCopy (which Futureshop actually sells) that can "compress" a DVD-9 disc into a DVD-R's capacity. And the resulting quality is supposed to be quite good, unless you have a 90" plasma or smthg.

Let me know if you need more details, and also I can hook you up with a drive.

Thanks buddy, that is very helpful info! How much would a drive cost? I just got a new Home Theatre system so it would be nice to be able to make back ups

If you still use a Mac, the external USB drives are quite pricey, like $300~400. Internal drives are around $200 these days, depending on brand. You'll probably want a DVD-Rom for reading as well (~$60) if you don't already have one.

Cool, so you took my advice and gone with Dell, that should serve you well for a few years.

Well, DVD+/-R drive 4x are all around $200ish + tax, Sony or Pioneer would be nice. In fact, the DVD burner burns CDR/RW too, so you can give your CDRW to someone, haha...

Let me know when you'll be in town, and I'll hook you up with one. We should grab a beer or smthg and catch up too.

Plextor's typically 50-75% more than other brands, IMO not worth it even tho their drives are good quality.

I hear that LG brand dvd-r/+r drives are really good and are much cheaper than the plextor.

lg burners are unreliable, even my cd-rw drive from lg was kind of iffy. the buffer underrun was terrible and such. but maybe it was just my model. plextors are expensive yes, but the quality of their rom drives are unmatched.

check out http://www.cdrlabs.com for full reviews on cd/dvd writing drives.
