I've found the pen's better for that, because if you mess up, the entire selection's not blown all to hell.

If you mess up, just hold ALT and go over the part you want to take out. That removes a selected area.

Oh I know. I did the polygonal lasso for a while, the pen's just so much easier to do curves with 'cause, well, it curves.
