GITS (Ghost In The Shell)

I figured I might as well start a GITS post...

I thought this anime was really well done, it defintily had a very anime feel to it (gratutous nudity, extreme violence, random crazyness...) I thought it was presented in a really well way. The Animation itself was really good, the plot was pretty deep, and the characters were really cool. I first saw this when I was 13, back then it was way over my head, I just liked the tit's and violence. Now that i've matured (haha...) I've come to realize how deep this movie is. Plus it has a really cool shootout at the end of the movie involving a tank. What are people's opinions on this anime?

Stand Alone Complex? Movie?

I figure that you're probably talking about the movie released in 96/97.
The movie is good. It's definitely a good production despite some fan discontent regarding Production IGs decision to use Hiroyuki Okiura's (Character Designer) more realistic approach to character design over Shirow's original design. I personally like Okiura's design over Shirow's because despite Shirow's obvious brilliance in the field of cyber communication, Shirow seems to base alot of his style off of fan service. I know I'm going to get heat over this comment, but take a look at the Dark Horse Ghost in the Shell and you'll clearly see that Shirow has tush and racks in mind when he leads you through his facinating world. The movie is simply deep. It's not something that you'd see Vin Diesel in with plenty of explosions and gratuitous violence.

If you want to see a good movie just like Ghost in the Shell by the same director (Mamoru OSHII), then rent Avalon. If you're in the Seattle Metro area, you'd probably have to stop by Scarecrow or Game City in Federal Way. The movie uses the same cyberpunk pretenses as ghost in the shell regarding reality and implications of cyber relationships versus the real. You'll begin to notice some trademark effects like his famous basset hound posters and his willingness to use vertigo effects such as hypnotic repetition to emphasize the concept of timelessness in a timed medium. It's a polish film, but definitely worth the watch and the ending is great too.

As for Stand Alone Complex, that's the new show airing in Japan with art based on Shirow's style. They're individual episodes and they are as powerful and insightful as the movie. In fact the director of Stand Alone (Kenji Kamiyama) worked with Mamoru Oshii on his films like Jin-Roh, and Blood: the Last Vampire, so expect to see Oshii like direction.

I'm an anime freak that happens to own a modified 7th gen coupe. I wanted to be an artist when I was in high school, then the reality of art making a living kicked in when I was a senior so I went to college and got a job. But the artist in me always loved anime and manga so I like to know who's behind the movies I love. Did you know that the director of Cowboy Bebop is the same director as Macross Plus? If I like something enough, I'll peep what other projects they've worked on and check out the different styles they played with or how they reformatted their original style to fit a new story.
It's kind of like liking Nas (which I do) and buying singles off of different MCs because Nas guests in it. Regarding hip hop, if you liked Mystikal's latest album, then you probably noticed the name Neptunes and try to peep what other projects they did.
