Me: Major, 100% dislike.
i still stick to my opinion that rap is a bad thing right now. its all fun and games till you people grow up and realize your 8 year old son wants to go out and "pimp" women out of some stupid car with gucci interior with no regard or respect for the women, men, and children he is influencing. rap is cool for people who don't worry about younger, very impressionable, people. if you have any, and i mean the slightest bit or worry, about a child today then you would realize why i hate rap.
I watch elementary school kids after school and they all listen to eminem and 50 cent and all that other garbage and it scares me that they think a guy who hates homosexual people without giving a valid reason, had a failed relationship that ruined a kid's life, and makes constant fun of his mother is cool! And the new 50 cent album with the gunshots and all that crap. If you saw how much kids look up to these scum bags that record companies make so much money off of then you would understand why rap has become such a nuisance to man kind.
All in all, ignoring all other factors, I find rap/hip hop just too disrespectful. I would never even say i slapped a girl or do anything these guys talk about in their songs. I still hold doors for old ladies and I still say please and thank you. I still see women as equal and I usually treat women better than men. Am I the last of a dieing breed or I am correct in assuming that rap/hip hop is ruining the way alot of people see and treat eachother?
I want to know what everyone else here thinks. If you arent mature enough to post a valid opinion, or just want to say you like/dislike with no reason to back it up then save it for the delete thread.

I like rap and i would let my kids listen to it. Don't group all rap into the same boat and same style. There are also positive rap that your kids could listen to.
Hip Hop/Rap is an extremely materialistic, immature genre. Where else do you get guys earning respect for the size of their rims and the diamonds they're wearing over talent? In what other genre do artists regularly shoot each other over petty "squabbles". They're adults playing kid games, and it's profitable...go figure.
However, I don't like the glorification of corrupted English or being a gangsta all the time, and given the current state of "hip-hop culture," it's nearly impossible to seperate the two.
Understand that it IS possible, however, much as how one can like the music of a satanic band without actually embracing the lyrics or being satanic themselves.
Unfortunately, most of the douche bags who listen to hip-hop cannot make this distinction, and therefore you get the gangsta-clones who feel the need to be all hard and bad all the time because the music tells them it's cool.
Then again, most of said douche bags wouldn't listen to it if MTV didn't tell them it was cool in the first place.
People are sheep.

I like some rap, but not sh!t like 50 Cent (assclown,) Eminem (assclown,) etc. The three rappers I listen to often are Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, and Kanye West. I don't care if they're mainstream and I know that sometimes they do some cliched crap, but all in all, I've been satisfied with them.
The stuff that's on top right now, however, I think sucks. It's gross that my roommate's 13 year old sister knows the words to "Candy Shop."
And on top of that, (yeah, I'll be labeled racist for this, but whatever) I got especially tired of it in high school when 90% of the black males were convinced they were already stars and should run around the halls reciting offensive raps or screaming _______ _______ ***** ______. I've come to college and had a completely different expierence, but it's hard to argue against the idea that rap discourages education. Few genres support such bastardized English as rap does, and if you think it doesn't have any effect on kids or kids regarding race, think again. I know many, many, many high school teachers and have graded papers with them. There is a huge difference between the english skills of the average young white male and the average young black male. Furthermore, much of mainstream rap encourages crime/violence. If anyone doesn't buy that, I'd like to see anyone account for the disporportionately higher number of young black males arrested for crimes such as theft, assault, etc.
Most people aren't responsible enough to listen to something like rap.

Rap is a joke, people that try to emulate it make me laugh. People that try to defend it make me laugh even more. If parents actually listened to the stuff their kids have in their cds/mp3s whatever, they would be shocked. The thing is, the parents don't care and kids start to think that all of the outrageous behavior rapped about is an ok way to live. It isn't.
lol again at positive rap, I'm sure that stuff is just overcrowding your playlists.

good point there, but if you want to blame music for the corrpt lil kids today instead of the parents then rap isnt the only genre guilty...believe me i was shocked when i found out my nephew was getting uncensored versions of dr.dre, eminem, and 50cent...but after talking with my cousin i was glad to find out that she wouldnt buy him gta: san andreas...but seriously if you wanna say rap is corrupting kids then i would you say you are right, but its not the only music...what about genres such as punk rock and goth-rock...what about those little nine year olds that wear all black and worship satan....see this is exactly what eminem was talking about...everyone's is pointing fingers at musicians and blaming them for their bad influence on kids...i think with a little parenting instead of finger-pointing parents wouldnt have to worry about this...a week ago at work these three teenagers were walking around being mall-rats and shit, and tried to start shit with another group that was minding their own buisness, the three were yelling "westside!" while trying to provoke them just because they were wearing red, i thought to myself, put these punk kids on piru st in south central la lets have them deal with the real westside ghetto...the reason why some of the lyrics in some songs are so dark and disrespecting is because that is the way a good portion of rap artists grew up, they rap about what they went through because they know a lot of people are struggling in the streets, with this you have an instant bond between rapper & rap fan...eminem grew up in a ghetto with his mom treating him like shit, so what does he do? he raps about it...he also raps to his daughter and how hes sorry he was a bad father and so on, thats what i like about eminem, he talks about real life shit...i listen to rap music, does that mean i disrespect women and hate my mom and i want to slang crack and do a drive-by on all my enemies? according to what your saying yes...like i said there are many aspects of rap, i dont know why the bad points have to be brought out and not the good...its not fair to focus on the rap-crap of hip hop...diskreet how can you say hip-hop is ruining the way people treat each other...there's a softer side of hip-hop and its called r&b..if you dont know what that sub-genre is it stands for rhythm and blues aka love songs...rock stars do the same thing...screw around with groupies and have women show their boobs, its not just a rap thing...basically what im trying to say is that leave the parenting to the parents and diskreet, if you dont like hip-hop, more power to you, just i dont believe in some stuff you said
anyways i have love for all music and i wish i had the time in college to take all the different music history classes
thats all i gotta say and i dont want to post any more arguements, it puts me in a bad mood and raises my blood pressure...anyways like diskreet said lets see some constructive arguments
Classic rap/hip hop was far better than the stuff today. Classic material always had some sort of message about stereotyping, social injustice, poverty.. etc...
Now it's nothing more than marketing for a bunch of over-rated individuals with inflated egos bragging about their riches and basking in their own self-importance that they do nothing more than reinforce negative stereotypes about black culture...
i like a very select rappers like 2pac, ice cube, and a couple others. i dont like rap cuz i just dont relate to it. i know nothing about busting caps, gold teeth, 20" spinners or growing up in a ghetto so why do i want to listen about it?
