This is probably some form of repost in one way or another but oh well. I may have even done this before. I'm always up for a good music debate: good vs. bad, talent vs. garbage, etc. Tell us your favorite bands, singers, albums, songs. Most importantly, some of the best! Best at singing, song writing, talent, everything. Feel free to bash an opinion about a "best", HOWEVER, you must give a reason, not just BECAUSE THEY STINK kinda thing. I'll start:
Best Singers: Stevie Wonder
Freddie Mercury
Sting
Scott Weiland
Chris Cornell
Jeff Buckley
Thom York
Oh yeah, THE POLICE were one of the best bands EVER !! Without Andy on guitar, Dave Matthews wouldn't have half the chord changes he does today. And the band U2......they can thank the Police for their career as well.

DAMN THIS DSL... ill try a response again...
in no particular order..
Rush - technically superior musicians
Primus - originality and technicality
Trent Reznor - genius lyrics/composition
Richard D James - genius composer & originality
Jimi Hendrix - where would guitar and rock be without him
Police - composition/technicality
Ozzy - King of metal
Kraftwerk - influenced so many hip hop beats its not even funny
Nirvana - simplicity at its best, and Kurts voice is badass
dah i forgot Mike Patton, the guy from Faith No More... this man has inspired so many singers and never gets credit.... Korn is not original if you've heard Mr. Bungle

Most underrated band - Dinosaur Jr they were huge up here when I was in HS
Favorite band - Radiohead
Best Album - Dark Side of the Moon but OK Computer is up there
Favorite Song - hard to say - There is a live version of One (U2) that is amazing, as far as studio song probably Paranoid Android or Fake Plastic Trees
Best guitar player - SRV
Most overrated band - Anything you see on MTV TRL
The type of music most people miss out on - Classical, seriously give it a try. I suggest Ralph Vaughn Williams to start with.
Im gonna keep with the above in Ozzy...that man is great...so many great songs you just want to listen to em over and over again.
Eminem is a good rapper...he can make words that shouldnt be in the same sentence as each other flow with unbelievable accuracy and understanding.
Brian Adams.....Best thing to come out of Canada...man can sing..not many canhold a tune at the same scratchy level and still sound that clean.
GnR (Guns and Roses) Best hair band ever......put so much energy in thier music and threw themselves headlong into anything that they did.
Brian Adams..!!!!?? More like Ryan Adams. Great song writing and axe playing. Jimi Hendrix......the only thing I can say about Jimmy is that Stevie Ray played Jimmy's songs better than Jimmy could. Listen to VooDoo Child. Stevie had twice the soul Jimmy had and played it ten times cleaner.
I figured Nirvana would come up but not in the first reply. Although you did say simplicity as its best and I applaud you for that. Nirvana was nothing more than a victim of circumstances. People were tired of the hair band scene and something caught, at that time people my age, the attention of the younger crowd. The most talent in that band came from the man behind the kit.....David Grohl. He was actually held back on the kit by Kurt for Nirvana songs. Now you have great bands like PROBOT (compilation), Foo Fighters, and he helped out the awesome band Queens of the Stone Age.
Radio Head does kick major a$$!! In fact, I was listening to "THE BENDS" and that's what gave me the idea for the thread. Oh, the best guitarist currently on the scene is definitely Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule and The Allman Brothers. There's nothin the guy can't play and play well. For all you Ozzy fans, pick up the live Gov't Mule album "Live With A Little Help From Our Friends" and cue up the third track "WAR PIGS". He does an incredible version. Give us some more to debate...................................
its Jimi, and sayin SRV, who Im a big fan as well, has more soul in voodoo child is absurd... Jimi was an innovator and the first to play Hard Rock, and without him there may not have been SRV... that said, i agree with the Nirvana as a victim of circumstance, but the band was also original and pretty talented, maybe not in the conventional aspect. I have to give props to originality and i think they were some of the best results of the 90's. as for radiohead, i like them a lot, and i think they are good musicians, but they are not all that original so im not that impressed by them.
props to jloos for mentioning classical, as classical is like a fine wine made from a complex equation, or something

NOT ORIGINAL!!!!! O...M.....F.....G!! You find one band even CLOSE to them and you show me. I'll listen. You may not like them, they require a certain taste, but not original is messed up.
Jimi, I never said Stevie originated that style but he did play it considerably better. It was cleaner, and more emotional. Play them side by side or one after another and take out the fact that Jimi is loved by all and the first blah blah blah. Listen to what's there and you'll see the truth.
well im not here to debate who played better, jimi or srv, but imo jimi's music is overall is more my style and please dont blah blah over why i like jimi... ive listened to both srv and jimi since i was born (literally, my parents are huge fans of both, and the debate over who plays voodoo child better is so oold)..
and saying who is more emotional while playing their music is rediculous in itself... i find jimis style way more original, and i may stand alone on this, but i find his music to be more entertaining (as im not a big fan of the blues) and more, hmm, free-minded if you will
as for radiohead not being original, it has nothin to do with whether i like them or not, as i do, i find their music refreshing as well as the members' solo albums, but in terms of the way he sings its been done before by others (mike patton for one as matter of fact) and kid a sounded more like an attempt to make an album similar to Aphex Twin (richard james)... yes they have their own originality flare, but to me its not particularly new

Don't get angry sweetheart. The title of the thread has the word debate in it. Hey, if you like Jimi better, I'm all for that. He's one of the huge inovators. (Stevie's Better!!). Still think the RadioHead thing is way off. "Kid A" was compared to a modern DarkSide. I kind of agree with that but nothing will ever beat DarkSide. The cd sales alone prove that.
Pink Floyd: can any other band come close to them? I suppose The Moody Blues have a similar style but NO. I saw the Australian Pink Floyd Show twice this year, and it was the best show I have ever been to....twice. David Gilmour even endorses them and had them play at an even he hosted.
Best Drummers:
#1 = Stewart Copeland
John Bohnam
Mike Portnoy
Dennis Chambers
Matt Abts
Another side note.......John Paul Jones was the best musician in Led Zeppelin
dont be an ass, im not getting angry, wtf. if youre serious then shove this up your or grow up
i thought about puttin pink floyd on my list as well, seeing as how they are just badass. animals was a badass album, as is dark side, and hell even their really old stuff is good imo...
as far as the drummers, what about neil peart? he is pretty unbelievable
i wont even go into the led zep comment, although i dont hold them in all that high esteem because they were only so popular due to the marketing and radio play in the 70's, they dominated in the airtime they got thanks to the deep pockets of their label

One of the best bands in my opinion is Smashing Pumpkins. Music was great and the vocals rocked also.
As for alternative/trip hop.....hands down its Sneaker Pimps! I listen to their cd, Becoming X, for weeks on end....and that cd is like 8 years old. Nothing beats that girls voice and those addicting drum lines.

You just proved my point. What do you mean "Led Zeppelin Comment"? Any musician will tell you the same about John. Especially in their early years, he kept that band together. His bass playing was rock solid and never wavered from tempo. Bohnam was great but not as solid as Jones. Jimmy Page will go down in history as one of the best riff writers of all times but DAMN was that boy sloppy on his solos. Head to any music shop where guys actually know their stuff and they'll tell you the same. Just watch the DVD's. You'll see Jones in the background really keepin' them together. Comeon people......any one else listen to good music like me and modoman?

Pumpkins were an excellent band. Billy is undermined as a guitarist. Although he never really showed off much in his solos. I was listening to "Pisces Iscariot" today. I don't anything about the Sneaker Pimps to tell you the truth.
well what i meant about led zep is basically what you covered in your response now, i was gonna say what about bonham, but yea jones held the sh!t together, especially on stage

Now we're on the same page sweetie!! Who hear has a "Guilty Pleasure" band that they like to listen to? I love Candlebox's first album.
