Korn is a blatant rip off of any Mike Patton project... if you know who Mike Patton is and have heard his many many different projects, you would understand there is no disagreement there. The singer of Korn has even admitted to it...
jloos statement about Nirvana is very well put, and very true.
Btw The Darkness kicks ass!! ive been waiting for someone to come out with a REAL rock album thats actually somewhat popular, other than the seasoned regulars.

I hope you're talking about THE DARKNESS !!!! That album/band kicks so much ass it's ridiculous. **** rock at it's finest.....next to AC/DC. And guess what, they actually play solos....good ones too.
yeah, that's their name--the darkness. good stuff. solos, you say? now I gotta get one of their albums.
any recommendations? do they have more than one out?
Jollysid what station do you work at, my dad lives in Hillsborough new jersey
IT's a few actually, all down the shore. I work for G1063, an alt rock station in monmouth and northern county, and 107.1/99.7 The Breeze, a classic hits station(and #1!), in Monouth and southern Ocean County(LBI).
Hillsbourough may be a bit far north to get us though.
I Live in CT. We used to have some pretty good stations. The worst one now was actually the best one at one time. 105.9, from what my pop's say, was killer in the 70's. They would play entire obscure albums late at night and those sort of things. Then later they had Piccozi & The Horn as DJ's and they were funny ass guys that said what they wanted. In the 90s it got pretty lame and within the last few years, ClearChannel bought it out and it's called THE RIVER now. They seriously play the same format every day. From January of this year until about this summer, I was able to hear Cheryl Crow "First Cut is the Deepest" at around 11am every day. OR, they would vary it by playing it around 8:30am and then again between 1 & 2 pm. We have to listen to it at work cause it's like the only station that comes in in our lab.
Let's see. There was 104.1. Those guys were the big Nirvana and early 90's bands station. Dee Snyder had his own morning show for a few years and that was pretty good (I missed Nick). McTrick......you know what I'm talkin about. One day, about a year or 2 ago, I put the station on and heard rap. BOUGHT BY CLEAR CHANNEL.
They only cool station we have now is WCCC 106.9. Piccozi is one of the afternoon guys and the rest of the DJ's are pretty cool and funny. They are the only independant station we have now and they have the highest ratings in CT. They also play Howard in the morning which makes me happy. Probably WAY too much detail than you wanted but I had to vent.

No it's cool. I like hearing about that kind of stuff.
I've heard nothing but good stuff about WCCC. You at least have one of the good rock stations in the country. If I remember right, Howard used to work there before he got big.
Clear Channel ended up buying all those stations in the mid 90s when the government rolled back all the rules about how many radio and tv stations one company can own. Then, to save momey they just put the same stuff on every station. Most of the jocks you hear on their stations actually don't even work in your town. They do their show for a bunch of stations around the country(not like Stern does, they make it sound like they're local). Then CC will give away huge prizes, but you don't realize that you're competing in a nationwide contest against all of their stations in the company.
This is somewhat off topic. I was listening to the Jet album Get Born and they have a few slow songs. The fast songs are far superior, and do rock. But I have to say I lost respect for them when I saw them on Conan last night and noticed they had a hired gun playing this simplistic piano part for them. did any one else see this? and if you did what is your reaction to that?
311 - Best sittin out on the beach with the homies music
Thrice - The Idenity Crisis album before major music companies changed their tunes
Aquabats - Best just act really stupid music
I've heard rumors that CC had generic DJ's. That's so retardedly lame that they should be shot where they stand. Yeah Howard used to work at WCCC. And I can't wait until he goes to satellite. When XM first hit the market a few years ago, I told people where I worked that this form of radio would blow up and people just kind of shrugged their shoulders. Reagular radio is DEAD!! Long gone are the days when DJ's can think for themselves or say anything controversial and maybe even play a song from an unknown band that we HAVEN'T heard a million time today already. Nobody better get their grubby hands on satellite like ClearChannel did with regular radio!!!!!!!! Makes me so damn angry thinking about CC.
Hey McTrick: I didn't see Jet on tv but heard them yesterday on Howard. I listened to them on the way to work this morning. I luv that cd.
Yeah it is a good cd, but i guess i was a little disappointed to see that the people that are gonna save rock and roll had to use a studio player for a piano part that was so easy any remedial player could have played it

I see your point. Where did you hear about these guys saving rock though? Just curious.

Who do you think invested in XM satellite radio? Clear Channel(although I dont think they own much anymore). You have to realize that satellite radio is run by failed terrerestrial radio programmers. Believe me, I've worked for a few of these guys. I'm intruiged by the idea of satellite, but I'm not going to invest in one until I think they might actually be around for another year. Both of the companies lose hundreds of millions a year. Stern may be good for Sirius, but Opie and Anthony wasn't exactly a boom for XM. They only brought over a small percentage of their audience.
I had an opportunity to work for Sirius(which is the less successful of the 2) and decided against it. I was just worried that I'd come in one day to find out that the company went bankrupt... Who knows, they may get it all together though.

Lots of bands use studio musicians in their live show. The Stones do, U2 does, Aerosmith does... I could go on. Those are some of the biggest rock bands of all time. It's nothing to be disspointed in, after all bands have more pressure to do other things during their live show these days. I;m sure Jet having a piano palyer had as much to do with their manager wanting to free up their singer to move around and have a prescence rather than just sitting behind a keyboard.
not to move the conversation, but you music enthusiast (of modern rock atleast) should check out a perfect circle's new cd, emotive. kind of politically motivated, but none the less, its the third cd they've impressed me with.
I really hope so. It was a good sign that as soon as Howard made his annoucement, the stock drove up a fair amount. I have no faith left that terrestrial radio will ever be good again. I'll deinitely be investing in a Sirius unit. Actually, I have one for the car but the connections were wrong for the back of my Clarion radio (which supposedly takes Sirius). Oh well. One can only hope....................
You know, I'm sad to say that I had huge hopes for these guys but it has been dwindling slowly. I personally think the only GREAT song they put out was their first single "JUDITH". I absolutley love that song and keep hoping they are going to rock like that again. They by no means suck, I just wanted something a little less..........involved, I guess you could say. Maynard just needs to rock out for once. Stop getting all artsy. Just my opinion.

I heard the album(on vinyl oddly enough?!) and I thought the same thing. It's just a little too overdone and not quite as good as their first.
WCCC did an all 90's weekend this weekend. All things aside with the Nirvana crap etc, the 90's ruled for alot of great rock. MTV was even great in the early to mid 90's. Why did everything have to aquire so much SUCK now?
thats a good question... why is it all of the sudden it seems, money took over everyone's interests. mtv was cool up until about 96 or 97 it seems, because at least at that point it was still 50% music.

MTV was ok back in the day. I think it all started going downhill when Blind Melon was featured on Headbangers Ball. I liked Blind Melon, but WTF to does MTV get off thinking they were a metal band? Just because they (at least Shannon Hoon) did one song with GnR doesn't mean they are a metal band.
Even the first couple of Real World shows were pretty cool. Back when they actually had to work and had real people on the show.
Then they cancelled headbangers ball, got rid of Remote Control (ok that was gone pretty early on, but it still ruled) and turned the Real World into a soap opera.

My area gets Mtv II now and it's a joke. Get this, the other night, Mtv 2 was playing some show or something while regular Mtv was playing Mtv 2 stuff. What a CLUSTER-F**K !!

We get all kinds of MTV and VH1's with digital cable. Some of the VH1's are kinda cool. They had a block of Janes Addiction videos on the other morning, I was late to class because I wanted to see them all. I really wanted to see the video of Jane Says and of course they didn't play it. But they did play Mountain Song Nothing's Shocking is a great album.

I'm just throwing this out there but has any one heard of Herbie Hancock?
If not seriously consider picking up a copy of Head Hunters, one of my favorite albums.
Also A Love Supreme by John Coltrane is a very nice album if you don't already have it.
Also for whoever talked about that Gov't Mule live album, yes, I must say that beast is amazing.
The Darkness is one of the new fun bands around and I definantly give them props.
Red Hot Chili Peppers is one of my most influential bands which somewhat has a connection to Jane's Addiction.
Sublime was oddly enough not mentioned yet... some of the best chill stuff.
Since I'm a bassist I must list a few
Jaco Pastorius
Victor Wooten (from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, his solo stuff is amazing)
Flea (one of the fun bassists of my time)
Also nobody mentioned Bob Dylan as somewhat influential in music
Radiohead is one of my favorites for sure.
Alright well I have a ton of other bands I'd love to list, just thought I'd bring some of these guys to the table for discussion.

I've heard of Herby but I still haven't gotten too deep into jazz. There is just WAY too much to get. Coltane is cool. I was the one who mentioned the MULE and they are one of my favorite bands. Warren is the damn man. The Darkeness is so dorky yet so cool. Their music is great. If you like Sublime, tell me you have the Long Beach Dub Allstars albums. That's the drummer and Bass player from Sublime with a new band. Jaco was INSANE.....both at playing bass and he was mental. Victor Wooten is GOD in the bass world. I absolutely LOVE Fleck live albums. I can't say as I am a Bob Dylan fan. Yeah is a good song writer but I can't get into him. he annoys the crap out of me. Oh yeah, RadioHead rules.

Herbie Hancock is amazing. I dig the theme song from Austin Powers.
I saw Dylan 2 years ago, he is getting old, but still puts on a great show. He lived in Fargo for a while, before the band he was in fired him.
