I'm thinkin' B16 (SI) or B18 (Acura), but do a little research and I am sure you'll find the right answer. If you want to really have fun do the K series swap.

k series is the way to go. B series is out. B16 or B18 are no where near the potential of what a K can do.

Re: what is the best motor to swap with for a 97 civic ex

it truely matters how much you are looking to spend what you want out of it, k-series is truely way to go but the price isnt for some people, so thats why most stick with the b-series

b20 with a b16 head.... nuff said, sure a k-series can put out more power.. but b-series stuff is proven and cheap

Re: what is the best motor to swap with for a 97 civic ex

if your on somewhat of a budget and lookin to be pretty quick i would do the higher compression b20 block with a gsr/b16 head. "the poor mans k20" ... by asking such a broad question it shows that you know very little about hondas. so i will try to break down ball park figures here..

base k = 1500
type s k/jdm k = 5500
gsr = 3000
b20 vtec = 2000

keep in mind there are many other misc parts you need to get that motor inside your car for some of those options. also if your not planning on doing the swap yourself, labor would be around the 1000 level if you have some decent shops in town.

those are mainly what i would be looking at to start your car as a honda enthusiast. but hey, to each his own.

Re: what is the best motor to swap with for a 97 civic ex

k20a2...hands down most cost effective for a kswap and powerful enough...

i had a k20a2 93 EG sedan and it was insanely quick...

total cost for swap was about $9000
that included:
Hasport mounts
Hondata KPro
Full Custom tuning on a DynoJet
Custom 05-06 wiring harness
AC/PS
K20a2 w/ 6spd
Karcepts shifter relocation kit
R-Crew race headers
Custom axles
Karcepts radiator relocation kit
custom ac/ps lines
custom intake
rsx -s shifter assembly
and labor
and few other things i dont remember right now

it would have cost less if i did most of the work but my friends and i did it at a Dyno tuning shop...
