Newb w/some turbo questions

Hi, everyone. A friend of mine wants to turbo his '02 EX and asked if I can build a kit for it. I'm a newb to the 7th gen civic world, but not to the turbo world. These are some pics of my '79 Malibu and the turbo kit I fabricated for it.

I've read through all of the stickies and they've been extremely helpful, but there's a few things I'm unclear on and I'd apprieciate it if you guys could help.

Is the D17 header flange the same as earlier D series motors or is it unique?

I see you guys are using extra injectors or piggyback computors to add more fuel, but what are you doing about timing? Are you guys using any type of retard device?

Do you have to add an FMU or RRFPR to raise fuel pressure or can the stock system keep up, assuming a better pump is used?

Thanks
Larry

the earlier d series flange will not fit on the d17 platform...

timing can be retarded or advanced using e-manage, AEM ems... there are a couple other piggyback but as of yet, no standalone...

you don't have to use an fmu to raise fuel pressure.. by converting the fuel system to a return system, buying a better fuel pump like a walboro 255, e-manage, and RSX 330cc injectors, you'll be able to supply and most importantly, tune your fuel curves...

correct me guys and part of this is wrong guys....

there is a stand alone, its from AEM. But you need to give up ac and something else to use it.

Damn you guys are quick! Can the regular emanage control timing or just the emanage ultimate? Has anyone used something like an MSD BTM?

Both emanages control timing but the ultimate has a lot more features than the regular emanage.

The new aem ems should be out soon its standalone and 7 wires from the stock ecu need to be used as a piggy bank. The return fuel system is a good way to go with rsx type s injectors.

The emanage ultimate is nice, but it's pricey. I was going over the contents of the TSI turbo kit, but I don't see anything about timing control. Are you guys finding it unnecessary at low boost levels?

E-manage ultimate has NOT been tested to my knowledge on the D17! Regular e-manage is the best bang for the buck currently. I currently use a 1:1 RRFPR but its not currently hooked to vacuum/boost and im tuned with out its feature and doing great!

Damn, your malibu is sick. My very first car was a '79 malibu, i loved it.

As far as retarding timing, by rights you should retard it a few degrees. Many ppl on a budget have boosted 8-10 psi daily without pulling some timing, including myself. The main problem with our cars is supplying enough fuel. The stock pump and injectors can not supply enough fuel to run safely over 8 psi.....especially during a 14 sec run at the track.

andyman is being a pioneer with the emanage ultimate.

the tsi kit can come with 2 extra injectors and management (w/ turbotimer in it blah blah) and hteres also an option of vafc-2 (can control fuel and spark) and that comes with some lil goodies too (forgot the goodies...)

btw THAT IS FREAKING AWSOME! i love old bowties, and a turbo thats almost the size of the car definately helps lol

Easiest way to do the fuel system correctly on this car would be an emanage and injectors. That would be sufficient for a relatively low boost application (even with the stock pump).

fftopic:

What kind of carb are you using on your malibu? Im starting on the setup for our 56 belair. Debating whether or not to turbo the 327. Im not a big fan of blowing through the carb with just a hat, since i havent dont that yet. I have sucked through a carb, and built a box that completely encloses the carb.

Thanks for all the help guys. Emanage and a set of RSX injectors sounds like the plan. I'll get him started on 6lbs then swap the pump if he wants a little more. We still have to go over some of his options, but I'll let you guys know what the whole plan is going to be.

Thanks for the kind words about the 'bu. The carb is a holley 750 double pumper with a proform main body and annular boosters prepped by Carb Solutions Unlimited. The carb tuning gets kind of intense with this kind of setup, but as long as you have a wideband O2 sensor you can get it perfect. The tricks to gettin a blow-through system to work well are, use a proven hat like from www.superiorairflow.com or www.csucarbs.com, use a carb at least 100cfm smaller than you'd use n/a to create a strong enough vaccum signal to the boosters, or switch to annular boosters on a bigger carb. www.turbomustangs.com has all the info you could ever need. I couldn't have built my car without the help of that site.

Do all of the mods in your sig apply to the SRT-4 pics you have? What's the plan for the BelAir?
