d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

I've been looking around and can't find anything but k-swap posts, i want to know what the differenc is between the a1, a2 and a, we all know a2 and 'a' are both vtec, and no number means jdm. however jdm has like 25 more horsepower than the d17a1 and like 13 more hp than than the d17a2. there has to be more knowlege than that.
what about the rummored 01-03 and 04-05 difference, what is that? can a motor be swapped without problems as long as its all em2, jdm or not?

any information will be greatly appreciated, thanks

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

There is no d17a.

The primary differences between a d17a1 and a2 are in the head, but the a2 also has higher compression pistons, a different oil pan, different exhaust and some other minor details. The differences between an 01-03 and 04-05 are primarily sensor related, notably the switch from narrowband to wideband 02 sensors.

Thank you for the infomation on the sensors but I own a d17a I'm looking at it right now, I also have a h22a yes, both with no number following the a because they are jdm

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

interesting that they built a jdm specific variant of the d17.

Regardless, I was able to find this tiny bit of information and that they're rated at 128hp. Those specifications are identical to a d17a2, which is rated at 127hp. Any differences I'm guessing would be sensor and tune related, with the differences based on emissions.. It's a bit strange that they would have two almost identical engines in japan, because the d17a2 is also available..

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

There is no JDM variant. there is no jdm version that makes like 25 more hp. jdm and the 7thgen civic are kind of an oxymoron. all the 7thgens were made in ohio some 4 door models were shipped over to japan. since the car was designed and created as an ULEV aside from o2 sensors there is no differences even the rest of the emissions equipment is the same. (also aside from egr's some cars got them some didn't).

I know what is on the japan cars cause I have all the parts catalogs for the over seas versions and every single part is the same when it comes down to the engine all the differences is in interior accessories (like heated seats special climate control), lights, srs system, and crash bars

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

I'm just curious on what he asked. Can we use an 01-03 engine to an 04-05? I know about the 01-03 being narrow and 04-05 being wide. Can we just use the wideband sensor to the 04-05 if we're using to replace an engine from the 01-03?? Get what I'm saying.

Thanks.

Yes, you shouldn't have trouble swapping an 04-05 engine into an 01-03 chassis.

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

Yes, Thanks.

But I'm More curious about the sensors like being wide-band and narrow band.
From example, I have an '05 EX. A friend of my friend's friend is letting go an engine from his '02 EX....FREE!! He's a baller..one of those kids with rich parents but doesn't show they are. So if my engine fails (knock on wood), can I just use that '02 motor and the 02' engine harness that's with it and just use the wide-band sensors from my '05.

Thanks again!

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

The harness would need to be modified, but the engine will work fine.

The engines themselves are basically identical, so the 04-05 ecu with the wide band 02 sensors will run it.

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

OK, OK. So what's need to be done with the engine harness??

Because before I registered to this site couple months ago, I asked one of dealership and I'm pretty sure they didn't really know what I'm talking about with the harness. I asked what's the difference....

ME: You know what's the difference between the engine harness between this years and that years?
GUY: Let me see. Well, umm, its different because it has a different part number...
ME: OK, so what's the main difference, why can't I use it for my car?
GUY: Well, because it has a different part number.

So I just left. I didn't really get the answer I was looking for. Seem like you know. Thanks.

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

Dealerships techs really don't know much, it's a bit frustrating for me to listen them give advice to customers when I go to pick up parts.

The exact differences I don't know off the top of my head, you would need to compare the wiring harness pin outs of using a repair manual. I think it MIGHT be just the 02 sensors, but I'm not completely confident. Regardless, any differences would be minor and easy to take car of.

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

I was thinking its just the O2 sensors, too. But we'll see, I'll try to use the 2002 harness for my 05 to see if it works. Thanks for the help and info.

Just use the '05 harness and sensors on the '02 engine.

Re: d17a/ d17a1/ d17a2 difference?

I know I can use the '05 harness, but I think its the cause of my P0135 with the heater malfunction bank 1. I replaced the sensor already with the OEM one. The code still reappeared after I reset it and drove around. I'm blaming the wiring went bad, so I just wanna use the one in the '02. Thanks for the input though.
