Rep Power: 0 Reputable repair shop for brakes
Hi,everyone,
I just joined this forum. I am in the western suburbs of Chicago, and just went to a dealer for an oil change. They told me that I will need front brake pads and rotors need to be resurfaced, and told me that it would be around $300. Is this reasonable price, or should I try repair shops such as midas, meineke, etc.?
Can anyone recommend an honest, good repair shop? Thanks in advance.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Ain't much at all cheap up there. Go far away or go to poorer burbs.
You want cheap? Do it yourself.
What car? How many miles? First set of brakes, or 5th?
For basic pads and machining rotors, we are around $190-210 per axle.
At a dealer.
Factory pads.
Maybe 2.5 or 3 hours south of you.
Chain stores (especially any store with BRAKES in the name) I can't recommend unless you actually have a trusted friend that works there. Or you are stubborn and already know exactly what it needs and can stand your ground.
Somehow, they can turn a $200 brake job estimate from us into a $900 cash cow here, and seems to be the common theme from most areas across the country.
Too many hacks and horror stories, too many tales of holding the car hostage until you buy $900 worth of extra brake parts the car didn't need.
Some people love them only because they don't know any better.
