animation software

A girl I know wants to go to school to learn animation. She asked me if I knew of any free or cheap software she could use to "play around with." I suggested the educational version of Maya and flash. I told her that Maya requires a hefty computer to run on and she said the computer she has is not all that powerful, I didn’t get the specs on it. So if you know of any other software I can suggest to her please post it here. Thanks To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

None of them are "cheap" though. There's Lightwave, 3-D Studio Max, Flash, Director, etc...
